NSW in autumn 2012: Autumn starts with floods, ends with dry

Rainfall
NSW recorded 166.1 mm of rain during autumn, above the historical average of 142.74 mm and the wettest autumn since 2000. Rainfall was generally above average in the south and west of the state, with Yanco recording its wettest autumn on record and widespread areas wetter than any autumn in the last 20 years, while northeastern NSW was generally average to below average. However, the autumn total hides substantial intraseasonal variability across the state.
More than half the rain recorded during autumn fell during the first week of March, with a 5-day total of 97.9 mm between the 1st and 5th. This was driven by a surface trough which lingered over inland NSW during late February and early March, driving record-breaking rainfall in the south and west of the state, in addition to widespread and severe flooding in the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee rivers. This event is discussed in greater detail in Special Climate Statement 39. An East Coast Low on March 8 also brought heavy rainfall to the east coast, with widespread flash flooding.
Conditions were generally dry for the rest of autumn, with NSW recording less than half the average rainfall in both April and May. Parts of western NSW including White Cliffs recorded no rain at all between March 5 and May 31, while Broken Hill Airport recorded two consecutive dry months April-May, for its driest late autumn on record.

The average maximum temperature during autumn was 23.7 °C, 0.3 °C below the historical average. This is the second consecutive cold autumn for NSW, following consistently warm autumns 2001-2010; such cold temperatures are typical for autumns following La Niña years. Days were particularly cold during March, associated with the heavy rainfall and above average cloud, with warmer days in April and May when conditions were clearer.
The average minimum temperature in NSW was 10 °C, 1.3 °C below the historical average and the 6th coldest autumn on record. Nights were generally below average across the state during the season but particularly cold in May, the 3rd coldest on record, associated with clear dry conditions and a lack of cloud.
The mean temperature for autumn was consequently 16.8 °C, 0.8 °C below average. This is the 4th coldest autumn in NSW since records began in 1950, and the coldest since 1984.
Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest autumn night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 1 June 2012. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
