NSW in summer 2012-13: A summer of heat and floods for NSW

  • 7th warmest summer on record for average temperatures
  • Driest summer since 2005-06 in the Murray-Darling Basin
  • Above average rainfall in coastal NSW, with heavy rain and flooding

Rainfall

NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 158.6 mm during summer, close to the historical average of 171 mm but the driest summer since 2008-09. The majority of this rainfall was recorded in eastern NSW, including the wettest summer on record at Grafton and the wettest for Coffs Harbour since 1958-59, with major rain events in coastal NSW during late January and February. In contrast, summer was generally drier than average in western NSW with below average falls throughout the season, including the driest summer on record at Parkes and Walgett. The Murray-Darling Basin recorded 106.5 mm of rain during the season (average 144.6 mm), its driest summer since 2005/6.

The first major rain event of the season occurred as ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald impacted coastal NSW between 27-29 January, with daily totals of up to 444 mm at Chillingham on the 28th and widespread 3-day totals of more than 300 mm. This resulted in flash flooding along the coast as well as major flooding in Grafton, with further details available in Special Climate Statement 44. Heavy rain also impacted the coast on 23-24 February, with daily totals of up to 415 mm at Yarras and further moderate to major flooding, including Kempsey, Grafton and Port Macquarie.

Temperature

NSW recorded a statewide average temperature of 25.8 °C during summer, 1.6 °C above the historical average. This was the 7th warmest summer on record for NSW and the warmest since 2005-06, with well above average temperatures during December and January but closer to normal conditions in February.

The statewide average maximum temperature during summer was 33.1 °C, 1.9 °C above the historical average and the 7th warmest summer on record. Temperatures were very warm in western NSW, most of which was more than 2 °C above normal and in the warmest 10% of years, with milder temperatures along the coast where February was colder and cloudier than average.

Temperatures were warmest during January, which was the warmest for NSW since 1939, with numerous stations breaking long-term records for both daily and monthly maximum temperatures during this month. Temperatures were particularly extreme on the 12th, when temperatures reached 48.6 °C at Wanaaring and 77 stations reached at least 40 °C, while very warm temperatures extended to the coast on the 18th, breaking numerous records between Williamtown and Moruya. This event is described in more detail in Special Climate Statement 43.

The statewide average minimum temperature was 18.4 °C, 1.3 °C above the historical average and the 9th warmest on record. Minimums were also warmer than average throughout the season but particularly January, with most of the state experiencing temperatures within 2 °C of normal during the season.

Other phenomena

There were several severe thunderstorms during the summer, with notable damage associated with hail and strong winds in the Tamworth region on December 3 and again on January 13. Tornadoes caused damage in Ungarie on January 21 and Kiama on February 23, with waterspouts observed in Sydney on January 18 and February 19. For more information on these events see the relevant Monthly Weather Review.

Heavy rainfall during 27-29 January caused minor to major flooding in the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast regions, including a record flood peak in Grafton, resulting in thousands of evacuations. Further flooding was observed in these regions following heavy rain during 22-24 February, including major flooding in Kempsey. These storms were also associated with strong winds which caused additional damage, with wind gusts reaching 131 km/h at Byron Bay on January 28 and 135 km/h at Sydney Harbour on February 24.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Friday 1 March 2013. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
