New South Wales in summer 2016-17: Warmest summer on record

Summer was the warmest on record for NSW, with persistent warmth, several significant heatwaves, and few cool periods. Numerous records were broken during the season, including the longest spell of hot days and the warmest night on record for any NSW station, as well as the second-warmest day on record for the State as a whole. Rainfall was below average, particularly in the eastern part of the State, although some severe thunderstorms caused local damage.

Warmest summer on record

  • The statewide mean temperature in summer 2016-17 was the warmest for NSW since records began in 1910, 2.57 °C above the historical average and 0.13 °C above the previous record, set in summer 2005-06
  • The statewide average maximum temperature was also the warmest on record, while the average minimum temperature was the second-warmest behind summer 1980-81
  • The summer was notable for persistent heat, with statewide mean temperatures in December, January and February all ranking within the five warmest years on record for that month
  • Summer mean temperatures were the warmest on record across almost 45% of the State, particularly in the north and east, with large numbers of stations recording their warmest summer on record for one or all of average maximum, minimum, or mean temperatures

Several heatwaves bring extreme heat

  • There were several significant heatwaves during the summer, which are described in detail in Special Climate Statement 61: Exceptional heat in southeast Australia in early 2017
  • The most severe heat occurred on 11 February, when the NSW statewide average maximum temperature reached 44.00 °C, the warmest February day on record and the second-warmest day on record for the State for any month behind 14 January 1939 (44.06 °C)
  • Numerous stations broke summer daily maximum temperature records between 10 and 12 February, although few of those stations were reporting during the January 1939 heatwave
  • Record high minimum temperatures were also recorded at some stations during the summer, with 34.2 °C at White Cliffs on 11 February the warmest minimum temperature ever recorded anywhere in NSW
  • The persistence of warmth during the seasons also led to several stations breaking records for either total numbers of hot days or warm nights
  • Hot conditions were especially persistent in northeast NSW, with Moree experiencing 54 consecutive days above 35 °C between 27 December and 18 February, the longest such spell on record anywhere in NSW

A dry summer with some severe storms

  • Rainfall was 34% below average for NSW during summer, with below average falls across large areas of the state and some stations recording their driest summer since at least 1990
  • Rainfall was particularly low in February, while parts of western NSW experienced above average rainfall during December
  • Several severe thunderstorms produced large hail, strong winds or heavy rain during the season, particularly during the first half of December, with thunderstorms causing large hail in the Sydney region on 18 February
  • The dry, hot weather contributed to a large number of bushfires across the state during the summer, particularly during mid-December and mid-February, with more than 50 houses lost to fires during February

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 March 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

For tables that refer to the year a previous record was set, this is listed by the year of the December, i.e. "2005" refers to summer 2005-06.
