A wet summer, despite a dry start to the season

    • Wetter than average across most of Queensland

      Overview

      Most of the state received average or above average rainfall during summer 2009 - 2010. Parts of the central interior had record high summer rainfall while large areas of the western and southern interior were very much above average, this being the highest 10% on record. 

      Maximum temperatures were below average in the north west, and close to average elsewhere. Close to average minimum temperatures were recorded along the coast, but were below average over the remaining western districts.

      Significant events throughout the summer included:

      • Record high minimum temperatures over the interior during the 8th to the 10th of December from hot north westerly winds ahead of a vigorous trough system;
      • Heavy and extended rainfall periods throughout the south east, central east and central interior at the end of December;
      • Cold January outbreak on the 19th, with record low temperatures recorded in the Darling Downs, Granite Belt, and areas of the central interior;
      • Tropical Cyclone Neville, named on the 21st of January;
      • Tropical Cyclone Olga, named on the 23rd of January;
      • Very heavy rainfall overnight on the 6th of February, especially around Gold Coast Hinterland, with totals exceeding 350mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 7th of February;
      • Heavy rainfall from severe thunderstorms in the Ipswich, and western suburbs area on the evening of the 15th of February;
      • Localised flash flooding from severe thunderstorms on the 16th of February in the Brisbane area;
      • Tornado in Atherton on the 16th of February, as well as a funnel cloud sighted in Oakey, also on the 16th of February.
      • Monsoon trough extended from a large monsoon low over the Northern Territory, to Torres Strait and into the northern Coral Sea, causing moderate to heavy widespread falls over western parts at the month's end.

      Summer

      December:

      It was a dry start to summer with raised dust and warm temperatures in the western districts. Record high minimum temperatures were recorded over the central interior due to hot north westerly winds ahead of a surface trough between the 8th and 12th. 

      In contrast, it was a wet end to December, with the remnants of Ex Tropical Cyclone Laurence located in the Channel Country on the 25th of January, and a trough extending northwards into the Gulf Country. Moderate to heavy falls were recorded through central Queensland as this trough generated a rainband with associated thunderstorms. The trough lingered over the interior to the end of December, and in combination with an upper low, produced rain areas over the southeast, central interior and central eastern districts.

      January:

      During January, two tropical cyclones were named in the Queensland region: Tropical Cyclone Neville on the 21st, and Tropical Cyclone Olga on the 23rd.  Heavy rainfall and flooding to the northeast tropical coast was a result of the combination of the tropical cyclones with an active monsoon. Heavy rainfall near the monsoon trough coincided with king tides to cause water inundation near Townsville and Mackay (King Tide occurred on 30/1/2010). 

       There was also a cold outbreak on the 19th of January. A strong south westerly flow associated with a low in the Tasman pushed cool and dry air into southern Queensland, and overnight temperatures dropped to 5.4 °C in Applethorpe.

      February:

      At the beginning of February, Ex Tropical Cyclone Olga was lying near Barcaldine and was moving slowly south southwest. A monsoon trough extended from Ex Tropical Cyclone Olga to the northern Capricorn Coast.

      During the first four days of February, moderate to heavy rain fell over the central coast, central and southern interior.

       The next significant rainfall event occurred over the south east coast overnight on the 6th of February. A surface trough remained stationary over the eastern interior as an upper level low developed over southern Queensland. The combination of the surface feature and the upper levels produced some very high daily totals to 9am on the 7th, included Mt Tamborine with 364mm, Canungra with 305mm, Nerang with 280mm and Oxenford with 279mm. 

      Heavy rain fell during severe thunderstorms in the Ipswich, and western suburbs area on the evening of the 15th. Again, on the 16th of February, very heavy rainfall and localised flash flooding occurred in the greater Brisbane area as severe thunderstorms developed over the south east coast. Some parts of Brisbane suburbs including Milton, Auchenflower, East Brisbane and Stones Corner were submerged underwater by the afternoon of the 16th.

      Also on the 16th, a tornado was observed near Atherton, located on the tablelands west of Cairns. A funnel cloud was seen near Oakey in the south east. A surface trough extended from north east to the south east of Queensland while an upper trough was moving eastwards across southern Queensland. The very humid and unstable air mass in the north and east of the surface trough provided these suitable conditions.

      By the month's end, a monsoon trough extended from a large monsoon low located over the Northern Territory, to the Torres Strait and into the northern Coral Sea. The monsoon low extended a thundery rain band into western parts of the state, and drifted slowly south east into southern Queensland.

      Rainfall

      Area averaged across the state, and based on figures since 1900, summer received 445.97 mm of rainfall (summer average rainfall is 324.68mm). It is the wettest summer since 2006 - 2007, and using statewide averages, it is the 8th wettest summer on record.

      The wettest overall was 2491 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Station, then 1738.6 mm at Mossman South Alchera Drive. Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years. 

      The wettest single day was 364.4 mm at Mt Tamborine Fern St on the 7th of February 2010. Some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record.

      Temperature

      Area averaged across the state, and based on figures since 1950, the mean maximum temperature was 34.12 °C, or -0.52 °C below average (summer average maximum temperature is 34.64 °C). The mean minimum temperature was 22.61 °C, or +0.3 °C above average (summer average minimum temperature is 22.31 °C). 

      Maximum temperature

      The hottest day was 46.3 °C at Birdsville Airport on 8 Dec 2009, and the warmest days on average were 37.4 °C at Bedourie Police Station.

      The coolest days on average were 27.2 °C at Maleny Tamarind St, and the coldest day was 19.6 °C at Toowoomba Airport on 2 Dec 2009.

      Some sites had their highest summer mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.

      Minimum temperature

      The coldest night was 5.4 °C at Applethorpe on the 19th of January 2010. This was also a new lowest temperature on record for the state in February. The coolest nights on average were 15.5 °C, also at Applethorpe.

      The warmest nights on average were 26.4 °C at Sweers Island, and the warmest night was 31.8 °C at Birdsville Airport on the 26th of January 2010.

      Some sites had their lowest summer temperature on record. Some sites had their warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Some sites had their highest summer mean daily minimum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest summer mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.

      A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

      This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 March 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

      Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
      The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

      The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
      The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
