Queensland in spring 2010: The wettest spring

  • The wettest spring since records commenced in 1900 - with near triple the average rainfall
  • Second lowest state-averaged seasonal mean maximum temperature
  • Slightly above the state-averaged seasonal mean minimum temperature
  • New Australia spring rainfall record, 3209.6 mm, at Bellenden Ker Top Stn

Rainfall

The rainfall this spring was well above the long term average seasonal figure. Apart from the northwest, part of the southern interior, Wide Bay and the inland parts of the southeast of Queensland, about 56.8% of the state experienced very much above the average (decile 10) rainfall on record. In addition, about 30.4% of the state, mostly in the southwest, central interior, along the Central and Tropical coasts and the adjacent inland parts, experienced their highest rainfall on record. The North Tropical Coast and the Whitsunday coast received above 800 mm of rainfall while adjacent inland parts recorded between 400 to 800 mm. More than 300 mm (some areas above 400 mm) of rainfall spilled over the central interior of the state - which was significant for the region for this time of year. The Southeast Coast received more than 400 mm rainfall and above 300 mm over the southern inland parts. During this spring, all but the northwest corner of the state gained more than 100 mm of rain.

Area averaged across the state, Queensland  received 248.2 mm of rainfall and had its wettest spring since records commenced in 1900. This was almost triple the state-averaged long term mean of 84.3 mm.

September rainfall was significantly above the average over most of Queensland where 91% of the state experienced very much above the average (decile 10), while 24% of the state, mostly in the central interior and in the southwest corner, recorded their highest rainfall on record.

October was also above the long term average, but to a less extent, 3.5% of the state had its highest rainfall on record and included the inland parts of the Sunshine Coast, south of the Cairns region and parts of the far southwest, as well as in the eastern Gulf coast. 43% of the state was very much above the long term average.

During November, most parts of the state, apart from the southeastern, far southwest and the Gulf Country districts, experienced higher than averaged monthly rainfall. About 4.8% of the state, around the Central Coast, the northern Central Highlands, the Coalfields, the central interior and near the southwestern border, reached their highest rainfall on record, while 55.5% of the state, mostly over the central and tropical coasts as well as the central and southern interior, had very much above average (decile 10) rainfall. It was the highest state-averaged rainfall since year 2000, and ranked the 6th highest since records commenced in 1900.

The wettest overall was 3209.6 mm at Bellenden Ker Top Stn, which is the new Australia wide spring rainfall record, followed by 1738.8 mm at Babinda Post Office.

Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record. Some sites had their highest total spring rainfall for at least 20 years. Some sites had their lowest total spring rainfall on record.

The wettest single day 363.0 mm at Wilson Beach on 20 Sep, followed by 281.0 mm at Numinbah on 11 Oct, then 256.0 mm at Babinda Post Office on 26 Nov.

Some sites had their highest spring daily rainfall on record. See a map of total rainfall. See a map of rainfall deciles.

Temperature

Due to the significant rainfall and cloud cover over this spring period, the state-averaged mean maximum temperature was 1.75 °C, lower than the long term seasonal average. This figure ranked the second lowest since records commenced in 1950. In contrast, the state-averaged mean minimum temperature was 0.8 °C warmer than the long term seasonal mean.

Maximum temperature

Apart from the Tropical Coast, Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country districts, most of the state had mean maximum temperatures below the normal figures. The interior parts and the southwestern districts were 2 to 4 °C below the seasonal means.

The hottest day was 42.0 °C at Urandangi on 5 Oct, followed by 41.2 °C at Century Mine on 24 Nov, then 41.0 °C at Urandangi on 6 Oct.

The warmest days on average were 36.2 °C at Century Mine, followed by 35.7 °C at Normanton Airport, then 35.6 °C at Kowanyama Airport.

The coldest day was 10.9 °C at Applethorpe on 16 Oct, followed by 11.3 °C at Roma Airport on 19 Sep, then 11.4 °C at Injune Post Office and at Mitchell Post Office on 19 Sep.

Some sites had their coldest spring day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Some sites had their lowest spring mean daily maximum temperature on record. Some sites had their lowest spring mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years. See a map of mean maximum temperatures. See a map of maximum temperature anomalies.

Minimum temperature

Most eastern and central regions recorded minimum temperatures 1 to 2 °C higher than their seasonal average while the tropical region was 2 to 3 °C over to their mean figures. The southwestern parts of the state remained slightly cooler than the averages during this spring.

The coldest night was 0.9 °C at Applethorpe on 7 Sep, followed by 1.3 °C at Applethorpe on 18 Sep, then 1.4 °C at Stanthorpe Leslie Parade on 7 Sep.

The warmest night was 29.4 °C at Mornington Island on 18 Nov, followed by 28.6 °C at Sweers Island on 18 Nov, then 28.1 °C at Sweers Island on 16 Nov.

Some sites had their highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record. See a map of mean minimum temperatures. See a map of minimum temperature anomalies.

Wind

The strongest wind gust was 106 km/h at Cape Moreton Lighthouse on 10 Oct, followed by 104 km/h at Burketown Airport on 24 Nov.

Flooding

For September, moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in and around the Carnarvon Gorge area and along the Queensland and New South Wales Border Rivers, which in turn produced minor to moderate flooding with some localised areas of major flooding.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in southern and western Queensland during the first two weeks of October. The most significant area of flooding was generated from this rainfall in the southeast of the state. Heavy rainfall recorded between the 8th and the 12th produced river level rises and minor to moderate flooding in the Sunshine Coast creeks and streams, Pine and Caboolture Rivers and in the Brisbane River catchment. Rainfall was also recorded elsewhere in the state including in the Border Rivers, Condamine River and in the Barcoo River catchments.

During November, Heavy rainfall and flooding was recorded in southern and western Queensland between the 14-17th of November and then a second more severe burst was recorded between the 25th and 28th of November. Heavy rainfall was also recorded along the North Tropical Coast, which produced minor flooding in the Mulgrave and Russell Rivers.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s annual climate summary for Queensland will be published on this web site on Wednesday 5 January, as will a comprehensive summary for all of Australia.

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 December 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 9 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.
