Queensland in autumn 2019: wetter than usual in western to central inland parts

Rainfall was well above average from western to central inland Queensland, parts of the southwest, the southern interior and about the far north. Overall, mean maximum temperatures were above to well above average in southern and the southeast coast of Queensland as well as in parts of the western Cape and Gulf Country. Autumn mean minimum temperatures were the fifth-warmest on record for the State as a whole.

Well above average autumn rainfall in western to central inland Queensland

  • Autumn rainfall was well above average from western to central inland Queensland, extending into the southwest and southern parts of the State; also in the northern Cape York Peninsula and areas of the north tropical coast, with a few sites reporting their highest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years
  • Drier than average in the Gulf Country and parts of the southeastern interior, and near-average rainfall reported elsewhere
  • Much of the above average autumn rainfall occurred in March, as heavy rain was recorded in parts of western to central Queensland, as the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Trevor tracked across the State in the last week of that month. Heavy falls were also recorded earlier in March along the north tropical coast, Cape York Peninsula and Gulf Country when Trevor made landfall. A few sites had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record
  • In April, a significant rainfall event in the last part of that month brought widespread moderate falls to much of the southwest and southern interior, the central interior, and parts of the central coast to Wide Bay and Burnett
  • May saw above average falls in the far north and small parts of the southwest, but large areas of central to southeastern Queensland reported below average falls

Record hot days at the start of autumn and warmer than average nights overall

  • Overall, mean maximum temperatures were above to well above average in southern and east coast Queensland as well as in parts of the western Cape and Gulf Country
  • Mean minimum temperatures were the fifth-warmest on record for the State as a whole, and well above average in northern, eastern and southern districts. Some sites had their highest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record or in several decades
  • It was a very warm start to autumn; March daytime temperatures were warmer than average in the southeast half of the State, and record warm in the South East Coast District and some locations had their hottest autumn day on record
  • Several locations in the central west and southeast reported a record run of days at or above 40 °C in March. In the central west, both Isisford Post Office and Longreach Aero had a record run of five consecutive days at or above 40 °C, and in the southeast, Gatton had three consecutive days at or above 40 °C in March
  • Likewise, overnight temperatures were warmer than average across most of the State except in the northwest; some areas in the southeast interior reported their highest March mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • April mean maximum temperatures were cooler than usual across the central interior due to persistent, cool easterly winds, but warmer than usual in the northwest, along the southern border and parts of the east coast, while April mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average across large parts of southern, northern and eastern Queensland, but near-average elsewhere
  • In May, mean maximum temperatures were generally warmer than average in the southern and southeastern quarter of the State as well as the Gulf Country, and there were areas of well above average mean minimum temperatures reported about the Gulf Country, north tropical coast and southern interior
  • It was a cold end to autumn, with a few sites reporting their lowest autumn temperature on record on the 31st

Tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall and flooding

  • By 18 March, a tropical low embedded within a monsoon trough in the Coral Sea tracked towards the eastern Cape York Peninsula and quickly intensified into tropical cyclone Trevor, with moderate falls reported on the southern flank of the system
  • Severe tropical cyclone Trevor made landfall on the afternoon of 19 March, just south of Lockhart River as a category 3 system
  • Trevor tracked across the far north of the Cape York Peninsula, and generated heavy falls in the Cape, and along the north tropical coast. Lockhart River had an event rainfall total in excess of 450 mm, including a 24-hour total of 302 mm on 20 March
  • Trevor had re-intensified to a category 4 strength system over the Gulf of Carpentaria on 22 March. Severe tropical cyclone Trevor tracked towards the Carpentaria coast of the Northern Territory, and made landfall south of Port McArthur, generating heavy falls
  • After Trevor made landfall, the system weakened to an ex-tropical cyclone, and continued to track south through the east of the Northern Territory, producing widespread moderate to locally heavy falls from western to central Queensland
  • Major flooding continued across western Queensland into April, following heavy falls associated with ex-tropical cyclone Trevor at the end of March. Flood warnings were issued for the Georgina/Eyre, Diamantina, Thomson/Barcoo/Cooper, Bulloo, Paroo and Warrego catchments
  • Major flood levels were recorded across the Channel Country catchments (Georgina/Eyre, Diamantina and Thomson/Barcoo/Cooper) with further inflows into Kati Thanda/Lake Eyre expected throughout April, May and June
  • Significant flooding was also recorded in the Bulloo, Paroo and Warrego catchments during early to mid-April but the most significant flooding was recorded further to the west
  • Tropical cyclone Ann formed over the Coral Sea on the morning of 12 May, peaked at category 2 intensity on 13 May as it tracked westwards towards the Queensland northeast coast
  • The system transitioned to an ex-tropical low before crossing the coast around Lockhart River in the far northern Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to heavy falls were recorded in the northern Cape York Peninsula and North Tropical Coast district

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Saturday 1 June 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
