Monday, 1 June 2020 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Queensland - Product code IDCKGC24R0
Queensland in autumn 2020: Wet in the southwest, warm days across the tropics
Rainfall was above average in the southwest, due to the remnants of Esther in March. Below average rainfall was recorded from central to southeast Queensland, and around the Gulf Country.
Daytime temperatures where warmer than average across parts of the tropics and southeast, and below average through the southern inland. Overnight temperatures where above average in the north and southwest interior.
Above average rainfall in the southwest due to ex-Esther
- Rainfall was above average in the far northwest in the Gulf Country, the far southwest and small areas of southern inland Queensland
- In contrast, rainfall was below average in the far north and along most of the east coast and adjacent inland districts
- The remnants of tropical cyclone Esther crossed into western
Queensland in early March, bringing heavy rain and flooding to western
Queensland, and some sites had their highest
autumn daily rainfall on record
- It was drier than usual in the far north and along most of the east coast and adjacent inland districts during April, though areas in the far northwest, far southwest and southern inland areas recorded above average rainfall
- Rainfall was above average across the northern half of the State in May, and below average rainfall was recorded over the southwest, and southeast Queensland
Warmer than average in the northern tropics
- In terms of mean temperature, Queensland as a whole was 0.49 °C below average in autumn
- Queensland's mean maximum temperature for autumn was 0.52 °C below the long-term average and the mean minimum temperature was 0.47 °C below the long-term average
- Daytime temperatures were warmer than average across parts of the tropics, from the northwest to central coast, and in the southeast; and below average through the southern inland
- During March, daytime temperatures were cooler than average across southwest and southern inland Queensland, but close to average elsewhere in the State
- It was the sixth-warmest April on record for Queensland, and maximum temperatures were warmer than usual across most of the State except a small area of the southern inland districts
- In May, the mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average across most of the State and a cold spell from 21 to 23 May saw a number of sites report their coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record
- Overnight temperatures for autumn were above average in the north and southwest interior
- March mean minimum temperatures were much warmer than usual in the Cape York Peninsula and parts of northern Queensland, and it was a particularly warm night on the 6th, with thick cloud saw some sites report their warmest autumn night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
- April mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual across most of Queensland except in parts of the southern interior, northwest interior and the far southwest
- In May, mean minimum temperatures were close to average across much of the State, but cooler than usual in the southwest and central Queensland, with some cold nights on 24 May, where some sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record
- For the year-to-date (January to May), Queensland's mean maximum temperature was 0.98 °C above average and the mean minimum temperature 1.10 °C above average
Tropical cyclones, and flooding in western Queensland
- Heavy rainfall over western Queensland in early March, associated with ex-tropical cyclone Esther, produced significant flooding in the Georgina, Diamantina, Bulloo, Paroo and Warrego rivers and the Cooper Creek catchment. Several roads were closed across the region, disrupting major transportation routes and some properties were isolated for a number of weeks. Major flooding was recorded at Thargomindah, Quilpie, Eulo and Hungerford
- Major flooding also occurred in the lower Balonne River in early March from heavy rainfall over the Balonne and Maranoa rivers during February; transportation routes through the region were cut and Dirranbandi was isolated for several days. Flooding during March occurred on already elevated river levels in tributaries of the Lake Eyre and Murray–Darling Basins
- Tropical cyclone Greta formed well off the east coast of Queensland in the Coral Sea on 15 March, but had no impact on the Australian mainland
Severe thunderstorms and cold spells
- There were severe thunderstorms across Rockhampton and Yeppoon on 19 April, with giant hail reported, which is rare for April in that area
- A cold spell from the 21 to 23 May saw numerous low maximum temperature records set across the northern and central districts. Thick cloud and cool air across the north resulted in 23 May being the coldest Queensland May day on record (16.94 °C, previous record 17.44 °C on 25 May 2012)

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 June 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on
observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from
site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they
cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the
climate record for the site,
based on the decile
ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in
decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very
high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time
as a
percentage
of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
