Queensland in spring 2020: equal-warmest spring on record

Rainfall in spring was below average in eastern and far northern Queensland, but close to average elsewhere. Parts of south-west Queensland had above average spring rainfall.

It was the equal-warmest spring on record (with 2013), in terms of mean temperature. Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average across most of the state. It was the equal fourth-warmest for mean maximum temperature, and the equal-warmest for mean minimum temperature.

Dry in the east, rainfall average elsewhere

  • Spring rainfall was below average along parts of the east coast, extending into southern inland districts; well below average rainfall was reported over parts of the Darling Downs, Wide Bay and Burnett, and central coast districts.
  • Rainfall for spring was above average in far south-west Queensland.
  • In September, rainfall was above average for most of western two-thirds of the state, and below average in the far south-east.
  • Rainfall was above average in the west, the northern interior, central west to Capricornia Coast, and areas in the south, Darling Downs and south-east coast in October.
  • Rainfall was below average across large parts of Queensland for November.

Equal-warmest spring on record

  • It was the equal-warmest spring on record for Queensland (equal with 2013) in terms of mean temperature and 2.08 °C above the long-term average. A few sites had their highest spring mean temperature on record.
  • Queensland's mean maximum temperature was 1.98 °C above the long-term average and the equal fourth-warmest on record; the mean minimum temperature was the equal-warmest on record at 2.18 °C above the long-term average. A number of sites had their highest spring mean minimum temperature on record.
  • Mean maximum temperatures in September were above average across most of the state, and well above average in western and southern inland districts. September mean minimum temperatures were above average across the whole state, and most of areas were well above average, with record warm in southern inland districts.
  • In October, mean maximum temperatures were above average in the north and east, extending into the southern interior; mean minimum temperatures were above average across most of the state, but close to average in the south-west and along parts of the east coast.
  • November saw mean maximum temperatures warmer than usual across most of the state, except for pockets of the central east coast. Similarly, November mean minimum temperatures were warmer than usual for most of the state, except for parts of the south-east and the base of the Cape York Peninsula. A number of sites had their highest spring daily maximum temperature on record, or their highest spring daily minimum temperature on record late in November.

Severe thunderstorms

  • Widespread thunderstorms affected Brisbane on the 24th and 25th, then on the 27th and 28th of October, bringing heavy rainfall to some sites, localised flash flooding, and strong wind gusts.
  • Thunderstorms produced large hail, with reports up to 6 cm hail in diameter south of Gayndah, fallen power lines in the Caboolture area, and localised flash-flooding on 28 October.
  • Severe thunderstorms impacted much of south-east Queensland on the afternoon of 31 October. The main impacts were giant hail up to 14 cm in diameter along a path from Amberley to the northern suburbs of Logan. Wind damage was reported from Redcliffe to Kingston with gusts over 100 km/h recorded around Moreton Bay. Giant hail up to 14 cm in diameter was reported at Forestdale and hail up to 13 cm in diameter was reported at Hillcrest. Some other reports include giant hail up to: 9.5 cm in diameter at Amberley, 8 cm in diameter at Springfield, 7 cm in diameter around Gatton, and 5 cm in diameter at Seventeen Mile.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 December 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
