Queensland in autumn 2021: above average rainfall in southern parts

Rainfall in autumn was above average in the south-west and southern parts of the state, in pockets of the central and northern interior, and in the far northern Cape York Peninsula. Rainfall was close to average elsewhere, except for scattered pockets of below average rainfall across the west and north.

Mean maximum temperatures were above average in the north and along the Capricornia coast, and below average along the southern border. Mean minimum temperatures showed a similar pattern, with above average minima in northern Queensland, and below average minima in southern inland Queensland.

Tropical cyclones, flooding, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms caused significant impacts to parts of Queensland during autumn.

A wet autumn overall for southern Queensland

  • Autumn rainfall was above average in the south-west, south-east and southern inland parts of the state, and also in pockets of the central interior and in far northern Cape York Peninsula. Numerous sites, mostly in the Darling Downs and on the Gold Coast, had their highest total autumn rainfall on record or their highest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years.
  • March rainfall was very much above average across most of the southern half of Queensland, and close to average across central Queensland and the far northern Cape York Peninsula. A number of sites had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record in March.
  • In April, rainfall was above average in northern Queensland, and below average in the west, south-west and parts of the southern interior.
  • Rainfall was below average across most of the state in May, except for the south-east quarter, and across parts of the northern tropics.

Temperatures above average overall; cool in the south, but warm in the north

  • Queensland's mean temperature for autumn was 0.45 °C above average, and the lowest since 2012.
  • Queensland's mean maximum temperature for autumn was 0.59 °C above average. Mean maximum temperatures were below average along the southern border, and above average in the north and along parts of the Capricornia and Fraser coasts.
  • Horn Island had its coldest autumn day (lowest maximum temperature) on record. Texas Post Office had its lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record and the Gold Coast Seaway had its lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature since 2000.
  • The state's mean maximum temperature for March was 0.59 °C above average. Mean maximum temperatures were generally cooler than usual along the southern border, due to periods of thick cloud and rain. Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average across the northern half of Queensland and along the east coast from Fraser Island northwards.
  • In April, the mean maximum temperature for Queensland as a whole was 0.25 °C above average, and warmer than usual across the northern half of the state, but cooler than usual across the southern border.
  • The May mean maximum temperature for Queensland was 0.91 °C above average. Maximum temperatures were above average across parts of the Cape York Peninsula, and from the north-west, across the central west, to the east coast of Queensland between Townsville and Fraser Island.
  • Queensland's mean minimum temperature for autumn was 0.31 °C above average and the lowest since 2012. Mean minimum temperatures were below average in southern inland parts, and above average in the Gulf Country and northern Queensland.
  • The mean minimum temperature for Queensland as a whole for March was 0.98 °C above average, and minimum temperatures were warmer than average in a swathe from the north-west to south-east of the state, and along coastal parts of the Cape York Peninsula, while close to average in remaining areas of the state in March.
  • In April, the mean minimum temperature for Queensland as a whole was 0.11 °C above average, with much of southern inland Queensland experiencing below average minimum temperatures, while parts of the north were above average.
  • For May, the mean minimum temperature for the state was 0.12 °C below average in May, and minimum temperatures were cooler than usual across the southern interior and parts of the north-west and the inland northern interior. Warmer than usual May minimum temperatures were reported in the Gulf Country and coastal parts of the Cape York Peninsula.

Tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding

  • Major flooding occurred on the Herbert River on the north tropical coast of Queensland on 1 and 2 March, associated with tropical cyclone Niran which was located east of Cairns at the start of the month. Tropical cyclone Niran intensified into a severe tropical cyclone by 4 March, and moved south-east away from the Queensland coast.
  • Major flooding was recorded on the Logan River from 23 March, and major flooding also occurred on the Bremer River, Warrill and Laidley creeks on the same day, with all peaks across these creeks and rivers easing by 25 March. Major flooding was reported on the Bulloo and Macintyre rivers from 23 March, and major flooding occurred on the Condamine River from 24 March. These western slow-moving western rivers remained at major flood level until the end of the March. Special Climate Statement 74 discusses the extreme rainfall and flooding in eastern and central Australia in March 2021.
  • On 4 April, heavy rainfall was recorded across the Cairns and Innisfail regions, with widespread totals of 150 mm to 220 mm in the 24 hours until 9am Monday 5 April. On 12 April, golf ball sized hail was reported around Mona Park (near Ayr) as organised severe thunderstorms and an upper trough moved through the region.
  • Flooding occurred in catchments around Cairns from 19 April, which was the start of several consecutive days of 100 mm to 200 mm of rain at some sites, with 3-day totals of 786 mm at Mt Sophia, and a 539.2 mm at Cairns.
  • On 11 May, severe thunderstorms impacted south-east Queensland during the afternoon and evening, continuing overnight into Wednesday morning of 12 May. Golf ball sized hail up to 4 cm was reported from thunderstorms around Wellcamp Airport and Helidon (Lockyer Valley), both on the evening of 11 May.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 June 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
