Rainfall
Summer rainfall tended above average across South Australia as a whole, with western and central agricultral districts seeing rainfall in the highest 10% of 114 years of observations. Area-averaged totals were just 2% above the long term average, and ranked 74th wettest out of 114.
The most significant rainfall event for summer occurred during the middle of February. A complex low pressure system moved the state overnight bringing widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms to most districts, and resulted in several locations observing their highest summer daily rainfall on record. Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, reported 109.6 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on 14 February, which was the wettest day during summer for any location in South Australia.
Rainfall totals typically ranged from 40 to 60 mm across the pastoral areas, and 80 to 140 mm across most of the agricultural areas, though some locations across the South-east districts missed some of the rainfall, with lower summer totals of 20 to 40 mm where some sites had their lowest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.
The wettest location in the state was at Lenswood in the Mount Lofty Ranges where 218.4 mm was recorded for the season. Nundroo on the West Coast and Clare High School both had their highest total summer rainfall on record and some other sites had their highest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years.Temperature
Despite a mild start and finish to the the season, summer 2013-2014 saw very hot conditions across large parts of the State which produced record hot days at several locations. Maximum temperatures exceeded 40 °C over much of the state on several occasions with some sites observing their highest summer temperature on record. Summer temperatures averaged across the whole of South Australia were then 1.5 °C warmer than average, resulting in the State's sixth warmest summer on record.
Maximum temperature
Daytime temperatures, as reflected in maximum temperatures, were up to 3 °C above average for the month in the eastern districts, but tended to be up to 1 °C cooler than average in the far northwest due to increased cloud.
Several bursts of heat occurred through the season, but a particularly strong heatwave occurred in mid-January. This was in the top 3 or 4 of heatwaves on record for South Australia in terms of intensity, and saw record runs of heat at several locations. This included a record 5 consecutive days of 42 °C or more at Adelaide, and a record 5 consecutive days of 45 °C or more at Port Augusta. In this heat event Adelaide also recorded 45.1 °C, the fourth hottest temperature on record for Adelaide. For more on this heat event see Special Climate Statement 48 .
The hottest location on average for summer 2013/2014 was Marree where the maximum temperatures averaged 39.3 °C for the season. During this summer Marree recorded 49 days of 40 °C or more compared to the average of 27 days, and had 19 of those consecutively through late January and the first half of February. 17 days were 45 °C or more, second highest numbers of days of 45 °C or more after 1973. In contrast, Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island was the coolest location for daytime temperatures with maximum temperatures averaging 22.8 °C.
The hottest day was recorded at Moomba Airport on 2 January where the temperature reached 49.3 °C, resulting in the 2nd hottest day ever recorded at that site, and the 5th hottest temperature ever officially recorded in South Australia. Mount Lofty in the Mount Lofty Ranges reached 12 °C on 5 January which was the coolest day for any location in the State during the summer period.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 March 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
