Winter rainfall was close to average across most of South Australia. Daytime temperatures were above average in most of the state, and very much above average in parts of the far north. Night-time temperatures were above average across most of South Australia, with coastal areas and parts of the southeast districts experiencing very much above average night-time temperatures. In terms of the mean temperature, it was the eighth warmest winter on record, and the warmest since 2013.
Near average rainfall
- Winter rainfall was close to average for most of South Australia.
- It was wetter than average across the western parts of Eyre Peninsula, parts of the Flinders Ranges and Mt. Lofty Ranges, and southern parts of the lower Murray Valley.
- Parts of inland pastoral districts and the far northwest had below average winter rainfall.
- Averaged across South Australia, rainfall was around 11% below the winter average but it was the highest winter rainfall for the state since 2016.
- Throughout the season, cold fronts brought heavy rainfall that saw several locations report their highest winter daily rainfall on record in June and July.
- Some sites on the Eyre Peninsula and across the Mt. Lofty Ranges reported their highest total winter rainfall on record and some other sites had their highest total winter rainfall for at least 20 years.
- Piccadilly (Woodhouse) was the wettest location overall this winter with a total of 621.9 mm of rainfall recorded during the season.
Warm days and nights across most of the state
- Night-time temperatures were above average across most of South Australia, with coastal areas and much of the state's south-east experiencing night-time temperatures that were very much above average.
- Kingscote Aero had its warmest winter night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record in June, and some sites in the state's south-east had their highest winter mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.
- State-wide, minimum temperatures for winter were the warmest since 2016.
- Daytime temperatures during winter were above average in most of the state with very much above average daytime temperatures across the state's north.
- Across the state as a whole, maximum temperature was 1.28 °C warmer than average, the highest since 2018 and coming in ninth warmest on record.
- Despite the above average daytime temperatures for most of the state, Streaky Bay on the western coast of the Eyre Peninsula reported its lowest winter mean daily maximum temperature since 1997.
- In July, a cold front saw several locations report their coldest winter day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
- For the state as a whole, mean temperature was 1.00 °C warmer than average, the highest since 2013 and coming in eighth warmest on record that also resulted in Mount Barker reporting the highest winter mean temperature for at least 20 years.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in South Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 September 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
