Monday, 2 March 2015 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
Tasmania in summer 2014-15: some cool weather, warm overall, wet in the east, relatively dry in the west
Summer temperatures were above the long-term average across Tasmania, despite there being many cool days. Rain events in the east in January and February meant it was a wet summer there, but it was a relatively dry summer in the southwest and part of the northwest.
- Wet in the east
- Dry in the west
- Warm overall
- Not as warm as the previous two summers
Mean daytime maximum temperatures were above average across Tasmania during summer. The hottest weather was on 3 January, when several sites reached into the high 30s, and there was another burst of especially warm weather from 20 to 23 February. There were several relatively cool days, especially in January in the east, but overall the number of very cool days and the number of very warm days was close to the long-term average. It was, however, noticeably cooler than summer 2013-14 or 2012-13. Hobart, for example, had a near-normal 4 days over 30 °C this summer compared to 8 such hot days in the previous two summers, but had 35 days below 20 °C compared to 27 last summer and just 20 such cool days in summer 2012-13.
Mean overnight temperatures were also above average overall, particularly in the eastern half of the State; the average minimum temperature was a summer record at Launceston. There were plenty of mild nights, most notably leading to the morning of 23 February when several sites did not drop below 20 °C. There were also a few cold nights, with sub-zero temperatures reported from some highland and inland sites at various times through the season.
Rainfall was mixed: below average in the west but above average in the east. Heavy rain in the east and southeast in the middle of January gave some sites their wettest summer day on record and caused localised flash flooding and some river rises. Some very heavy falls in the northeast in the middle of February brought localised flooding to the upper South Esk catchment. The rain in the east has helped to ease longer-term serious rainfall deficiencies in that area, although rainfall for the 15-month period from December 2013 is well below average in parts of the East Coast. Rain for the last 15 months has also been well below average in parts of the northwest and southwest.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 March 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
