Tasmania in autumn 2015: cool overall, dry in the east
Autumn 2015 brought below-average temperatures to Tasmania, with plenty of cool days and nights through the season. It was relatively dry in the east, but rain in March and May kept most other areas close to average overall.
- Cool days and cool nights
- Coolest autumn since 2006
- Below-average rain in the east
- Near-average rain in most other areas
- Very windy in early May
March, April and May all brought generally cool weather to Tasmania, with fewer warm days than usuaul. The mean daily maximum temperature across the State was 0.83 °C below average, the lowest since autumn 2006. As might be expected, most sites had their warmest day of autumn early in March, but the highest temperature for the State was actually on 1 April, when Flinders Island Airport reached 28 °C. The coldest days were in May in the wake of cold fronts that brought snow to low levels: Mount Wellington did not get above freezing at all on the 6th or the 31st.
Overnight minimum temperatures were also on the cool side overall, with the statewide mean daily minimum temperature 0.76 °C below average, also the coolest since 2006. A few sites had record low mean daily minimum temperature. There were some particularly cold mornings in late April, and again in the second half of May.
Rainfall was varied through the season. The west and north had a wet March, but then the whole State had a relatively dry April. May was wet in the west, but dry in the east. Overall, total autumn rainfall was close to average in most areas, but generally below average in the east. A few pockets, notbaly in the western highlands and the northeast coast, had above-average autumn total rain. The State's total rain was just 4% above average.
There were strong and gusty winds early in May. A gust to 159 km/h at Mount Wellington on 5 May was the strongest autumn gust recorded in Tasmania, and a gust to 157 km/h on Maatsuyker Island on 12 May equalled the old autumn record.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 1 June 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
