Victoria in spring 2015: below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures
Spring 2015 in Victoria saw warmer and drier than normal conditions over most of the State. Victorian mean temperatures for spring were their warmest in 106 years of observations. Spring rainfall was generally below average across the State, with Victoria as a whole recording its 6th driest spring on record.
- warmest spring on record for the State as a whole
- record warm days in the south and northwest
- record warm nights in the east
- 6th driest spring on record
Overall spring rainfall for Victoria was 47% below average, making it the State's 6th driest spring on record. Parts of West Gippsland and around Cape Otway had their driest spring on record. Most of the rest of the State observed below-average to very-much-below-average rainfall during spring, except for patches of average rainfall in East Gippsland, the Mallee and in the north around Shepparton and Cobram. Several sites had either their lowest total spring rainfall on record or lowest total spring rainfall for decades. A cold front and low pressure system brought rainfall to Victoria in the first week of November, gaving Murrayville its highest spring daily rainfall on record. Murrayville was the only long-term Victorian site that recorded above-average rainfall for spring. Water storages in Victoria are now more than 20% below what they were at the same last year.
Victoria's overall mean temperature for spring was 2.05 °C above the long-term average, the highest in 106 years of observations (the previous record was +1.99 °C in 1914). Average maximum temperatures for Victoria were their second highest on record at 2.99 °C above normal (the record is +3.33 °C in 1914). High temperatures occurred much earlier in the spring than usual, with the first half of October having many days that were more typical of summer; details can be found in the Special Climate Statement (Early-season heat across southern Australia). All Victorian sites observed maximum temperatures that were above their long-term average for spring. Many sites (including those around Melbourne) had their highest spring mean temperature on record, highest spring mean daily maximum temperature on record, and some had their highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record.
Spring began with a cold night in September and several sites in western and central districts had their lowest spring temperature on record. For spring as a whole however, overnight temperatures were above average across the State. Minimum temperatures were highest on record in areas of the State's east and were very much above average for most of the rest of Victoria. There were patches of above-average mean minimum temperatures in West Gippsland, near the South Australian border, and in the State's north. Almost all Victoria sites had spring mean minimum temperatures above their long-term average. Average minimum temperatures for Victoria as a whole were 5th warmest on record (1.11 °C above normal).
A cold front that swept across Victoria late on 25 November resulted in many sites recording maximum wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h, including 119 km/h at Mount Hotham, and 117 km/h at both Colac (Mount Gellibrand) and Eildon Fire Tower. Gale force winds were again experienced across many parts of Victoria on 30 November, with Nhill Aerodrome reaching a maximum wind gust of 120 km/h, equalling the 120 km/h at Mount Buller on 6 October as the strongest wind gusts in Victoria this spring.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Victoria using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 December 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
