Rainfall
Below average rainfall was experienced in large parts of western and central WA during summer 2009-10, with very much below average rainfall recorded mainly near the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) west coast. Above average summer rainfall was confined to parts of the Kimberley, far eastern Pilbara, and Interior with small pockets of very much above average rainfall in the north and west Kimberley and far east Pilbara (see summer 2009-10 rainfall decile map). For Western Australia as a whole, summer 2009-10 rainfall was near average.
Below average levels of thunderstorm activity in the south of the state caused the driest summer on record for many sites across the western Southwest Land Division (SWLD), and some did not register any measurable rainfall for the entire summer. A quiet monsoon season also saw lowest on record rainfall for summer in parts of the inland Pilbara. Only two tropical cyclones impacted on WA during the summer of 2009-10, a lower than normal level of summertime tropical cyclone activity for WA, however TC Laurence in December, and TC Magda in January, both crossed the west Kimberley coast as severe tropical cyclones. Some sites in the west Kimberley recorded highest daily rainfall recordings for summer with the passage nearby of TC Laurence.
Some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record. Some sites had their lowest total summer rainfall on record .
Temperature
The mean temperature for WA this summer was 29.6°C, which was 0.2°C above the previous hottest summer of 1997-98, and 1.3°C above the long-term summer average of 28.3°C. The record hot summer was the result of a sucession of very hot months with WA recording its third hottest December in terms of mean temperature, its second hottest January, and its third hottest February.
Maximum temperature
Apart from small areas of below average to near average mean maximum temperatures in some coastal regions and near the WA/NT border, summer 2009-10 saw above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures across most of Western Australia, with sites in the Goldfields, Eucla and SWLD recording their highest summer mean maximum temperatures on record. Maximum temperatures up to 5°C above normal were recorded in the inland Pilbara. The statewide mean maximum temperature for summer 2009-10 was 36.7°C, which was 1.5°C above the long-term average and the equal highest on record, along with the summer of 1997-98.
Some sites had their highest summer temperature on record. Some sites had their highest mean summer temperature on record
Minimum temperature
Apart from near average summer mean minimum temperatures in coastal regions of western and southern of WA, as well as a small part of the Kimberley, above to very much above average mean minima were experienced across the majority of the state. A small number of sites scattered across the state recorded their highest summer mean minimum temperature on record, whilst parts of the inland Pilbara and Gascoyne, Goldfields, southern Interior and Eucla registered mean minima up to 3°C higher than normal. Overall, the statewide mean minimum temperature for summer was 22.5°C, which was 1.1°C above the long-term average and the highest since comparable records commenced in 1950.
Some sites had their warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record. Some sites had their highest mean minimum temperature on record .

Notes
The Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Tuesday 2 March 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 30 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
