Rainfall
Rainfall totals in winter 2010 in the Southwest Land Division (SWLD), and adjacent Goldfields and Gascoyne were below to very much below average with many sites in the western parts of the SWLD registering their driest winter on record (see winter rainfall totals & decile map). Averaged across Southwest WA (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), winter 2010 was the driest winter since comparable records commenced in 1900, the result of the third driest June on record, a below average July, and the sixth driest August on record.
Similarly, when averaged across the entire SWLD, winter rainfall was second lowest on record, only slightly behind that of 2006. The winter months in the SWLD saw the fourth driest June on record, a below average July, and a below average August.
Some parts of the SWLD did however record significant rainfall during winter. Cape Riche in the South Coastal district recorded 88 mm on the 5th June to break its winter daily rainfall record, whilst Arena, near Mingenew, in the Central West recorded 42.0 mm on the 9th July to register its highest winter daily rainfall on record.
In contrast, above to very much above average winter rainfall was recorded over most of the Kimberley and adjacent Pilbara and Interior, the result of above average July and August rainfall. Country Downs in the west Kimberley recorded its wettest winter on record. A cloudband in mid-June produced some exceptionally heavy falls in the west Pilbara, with some sites recording daily totals over 100 mm and registering their wettest winter day on record. Another cloudband in early July produced unseasonally high rainfall in western and southern Kimberley regions, with daily falls over 70 mm reported and several sites recording their wettest winter day on record.
Maximum temperature
Winter mean maximum temperatures were near average over much of central and southern WA. However, above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures occurred in the north and west Kimberley, the Pilbara, and north and west Gascoyne, as well as western parts of the SWLD, with up to 2 °C above normal mean maxima in the west Kimberley, most of the west Pilbara, and the northern Gascoyne. Roebourne and Onslow in the Pilbara experienced their warmest winter on record.
Mean maximum temperatures were below average along WA's eastern border, up to 2 °C cooler than normal in the northeast Interior and southeast Kimberley (see winter maximum temperature decile map & anomaly map). When averaged over the whole state, winter 2010 was near average.
Minimum temperature
Winter mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, and Interior, with up to 4 °C above normal mean minima in the central Kimberley. Mardie and Onslow Airport on the west Pilbara coast recorded their warmest winter on record in terms of mean overnight temperatures.
In contrast, below to very much below average mean minimum temperatures were recorded in most of the SWLD, apart from most of the South and Southeast Coastal districts, with up to 3 °C cooler than normal mean minima in the Central Wheat Belt (see winter minimum temperature decile map & anomaly map). Several sites in the SWLD and Goldfields registered their lowest winter temperature on record in late June or early July, and several sites, mainly in the Central Wheat Belt and Great Southern recorded their coldest winter on record in terms of mean minimum temperature as a result of the particularly dry winter.
When averaged over the whole state, winter 2010 was above average, however, it was the third coldest winter in terms of mean minimum temperature when averaged over Southwest WA.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Wednesday 1 September 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from all available
years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for
sites with less than 10 years of record.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
