Rainfall
Rainfall totals in spring 2010 were below to very much below average across the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) of WA, mainly as a result of below average rainfall in September and October. Numerous sites in the region recorded their lowest spring rainfall for 30 years, and many witnessed their driest spring on record (see spring rainfall totals & decile map ). Averaged across the SWLD it was the 5th driest spring since comparable records commenced in 1900, whilst in the Lower Southwest region (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), spring 2010 was the driest spring on record.
In contrast, above to very much above average spring rainfall was recorded over much of the Kimberley, Pilbara, Interior, Gascoyne, Goldfields and Eucla, mainly as a result of above average September and October rainfall. Significant cloudbands in September, as well as thunderstorm activity through the spring months, has produced some heavy daily falls in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and Eucla, with some sites in these regions registering their wettest spring day, as well as wettest spring on record.
Maximum temperature
Spring mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average over western WA from Onslow in the Pilbara down to Esperance in the South Coastal, with means up to 4 °C above normal between Geraldton and Shark Bay. Many towns in western parts of WA recorded their warmest spring on record as a result of a warmer than normal September and October, followed by a record warm November.
Mean maximum temperatures for spring 2010 were below to very much below average over eastern to central WA from the northeast Kimberley south to the Eucla district and the adjacent Goldfields area, with up to 4 °C cooler than normal mean maxima in the eastern Interior. Giles and Balgo Hills in the Interior experienced their coolest spring days on record (see spring maximum temperature decile map & anomaly map). When averaged over the whole state, spring 2010 was near average, however, it was the warmest spring for the Lower Southwest since comparable records commenced in 1950.
Minimum temperature
Spring mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average over a large area from the west Kimberley to the Pilbara and Gascoyne, with mean minima up to 3 °C above normal along the Pilbara coast and in the west Gascoyne. Several sites in the west Pilbara and northern Gascoyne recorded their warmest spring nights on record.
In contrast, below to very much below average mean minimum temperatures were recorded in southeastern parts of the Kimberley and northeast Interior, with up to 3 °C cooler than normal mean minima in the northeast Interior. Eyre in the Eucla district and Balgo Hills in the Interior registered their coolest spring nights on record (see spring minimum temperature decile map & anomaly map).
When averaged over the whole state, spring 2010 was near average.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 December 2010. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
