Rainfall
Rainfall during spring 2011 was above to very much above average across most of WA. Only small areas of the state recorded below average rainfall, in the west Kimberley, far west Pilbara, and eastern Eucla. When averaged across the state, spring 2011 was the second wettest spring on record (records commenced in 1900), only behind the spring of 1975, whilst the Southwest Land Division (SWLD) recorded its eighth wettest spring.
Middle level troughs were a significant feature of the WA weather in spring 2011, particularly in October and November, and were responsible for numerous periods of active thunderstorms and unseasonal rainfall events, which led to the second wettest spring on record for the state. Numerous sites in the Central Wheat Belt and Great Southern, as well as sites in the Central West, Goldfields, Gascoyne, Pilbara, and Kimberley recorded their wettest spring on record, with several of these having over 100 years of rainfall records. Of particular note was the spring total of 140.8 mm recorded at Kellerberrin in the Central Wheat Belt, its highest spring rainfall in 119 years, since records commenced in 1893. Also a large number of spring daily rainfall records were broken in October and November, in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, and SWLD.
In terms of climate drivers, it was notable that above average sea surface temperatures were evident in the Indian Ocean during spring 2011, and that the La Nina in the Pacific Ocean redeveloped during early spring, following one of the strongest La Nina episodes on record in 2010-11.
Maximum temperature
Mean maximum temperatures for spring 2011 were near average for much of WA. However, areas near the west coast and parts of the south coast saw above to very much average mean maxima, with temperatures up to 2 °C warmer than normal in the Eucla, Southwest, and Shark Bay region of the Gascoyne. In contrast, below to very much below average mean maximum temperatures were observed in the central and east Kimberley, northern Interior, coastal and east Pilbara, northern Goldfields, and southern Gascoyne, with maxima up to 2 °C cooler than normal in parts of these districts. Wyndham in the east Kimberley recorded its lowest mean maximum temperature for spring in 42 years of record with 36.8 °C, the result of lower than normal temperatures in September due to stronger than normal easterly winds, and cloud and rainfall impacting on solar heating in October and November.
When averaged across the state, spring 2011 was near average, but it was above average in the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay).
Minimum temperature
Mean minimum temperatures for spring 2011 were above to very much above average in western and southern parts of WA, with mean minima in the east coastal Eucla up to 3 °C above normal. As a result, Eucla, Pemberton, and Jurien Bay recorded their highest spring mean minima on record. In contrast, mean minimum temperatures were below to very much below average in Kimberley, and northern and central Interior. The northeast Kimberley saw mean minimum temperatures up to 3 °C cooler than normal, and Wyndham recorded its lowest spring mean daily minimum temperature in 42 years of record with 23.4 °C.
Wyndham also broke its record for lowest spring temperature when on 13 September it recorded a minimum of 13.5 °C. A strong high in the Bight brought cool air to the region from the south and allowed the overnight temperature to drop to its lowest spring value in 42 years.
When averaged across the state, spring 2011 was near average for WA, but was 5th warmest on record for the Lower Southwest.

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Thursday 1 December 2011. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Records in this summary are based on sites with at least 30 years of data.
