Western Australia in spring 2014: Warmest spring on record
With the exception of parts of the west Pilbara, almost the whole of WA saw above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures in spring 2014, with highest on record mean maxima reported at sites in the southwest Kimberley, Pilbara, eastern South West Land Division(SWLD), Goldfields, Southern Interior, and Eucla. Mean maxima were 3 °C to 4 °C warmer than normal in the Southern Interior. When averaged across WA, the spring mean maximum temperature was 2.3 °C above average and ranked as the warmest spring since comparable records commenced in 1910, 0.4 °C above the previous warmest spring in 2006. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) spring 2014 ranked as the third warmest on record, only behind spring 2010 (first), spring 1914 (second). Both September 2014 and October 2014 in WA were the warmest on record, whilst November 2014 was also above average.
Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average for most of WA, apart from the north and east Kimberley, with highest on record mean minimum spring temperatures recorded at sites in the inland and eastern SWLD, southern Gascoyne, Southern Interior, and Eucla. Mean minima were 3 °C to 5 °C warmer than normal in large parts of the Southern Interior. In contrast, the north and east Kimberley saw below to very much below average mean minimum temperatures, with temperatures between 1 °C and 2 °C cooler than normal. When averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature for spring 2014 was 1.4 °C above average, and the second warmest spring on record since records commenced in 1910, just 0.1 °C behind the record high in 2006. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), spring 2014 was the fourth warmest on record, behind spring 2013 (first), spring 2006 (second) and spring 1914 (third).
Spring 2014 saw above to very much above average rainfall across much of WA, with below to very much below average rainfall mostly confined to small areas of the western SWLD, eastern Southern Interior, and Kimberley. Record high spring rainfall was reported at a few sites in the eastern and northern SWLD, and far western Goldfields. Several sites in the Central West reported spring daily rainfall records as a result of a rainfall event on 21st and 22nd September, and a number of sites in the SWLD, particularly in the South and Southeast Coastal, recorded spring records as a result of an event from 18 to 20 October, whilst sites in the Central West, Eucla, and western Goldfields recorded spring records as a result of thunderstorm events in mid November and late November. When rainfall was averaged across the State, spring 2014 was above average, and it was also above average for the South West Land Division (SWLD) as a whole, whilst the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) recorded near average rainfall for spring 2014.
- Highest mean maximum temperature on record for WA, third highest on record for southwest WA
- Second highest mean minimum temperature on record for WA, fourth highest on record for the southwest WA
- Above average rainfall for WA

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Monday 1 December 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
