Western Australia in summer 2014-15: Fourth hottest summer
Almost the whole of WA saw above to very much above average mean maximum temperatures in summer 2014-15, with the exception of the west Pilbara coast, and the east Kimberley and adjacent northeast Northern Interior. A few sites in the northern Goldfields and Southern Interior, as well as in the South West, recorded their warmest summer on record. When averaged across WA, the summer mean maximum temperature was 1.56 °C above average and ranked as the fourth warmest summer since comparable records commenced in 1910, due to an above average December 2014, a near average January 2015, and the second hottest February on record in 2015. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay) summer 2014-15 was 1.51 °C above average and ranked as the third hottest on record, only behind summer 2009-2010 (+1.74 °C ) and summer 2012-2013 (+1.72 °C).
Mean minimum temperatures were above to very much above average for most of WA, apart from much of the Kimberley and the adjacent northeast Northern Interior, with mean minima up to 3 °C warmer than normal in the Southern Interior and adjacent parts of neighbouring districts. Warburton in the Southern Interior recorded its hottest summer on record. . When averaged across the State, the mean minimum temperature for summer was 0.85 °C above average, and the third warmest summer since records commenced in 1910. For the Lower Southwest, summer 2014-15 was 0.49 °C above the long-term average.
Summer 2014-15 saw below to very much below average rainfall in the Southwest, eastern parts of the Southwest Land Division (SWLD), Goldfields, east Eucla, Pilbara and northwest Gascoyne, and parts of the north Kimberley. A number of sites in the SWLD, Goldfields, Pilbara, and Kimberley observed either their driest summer on record, or driest summer for at least 20 years. Above average rainfall was mostly confined to parts of the Kimberley, Northern Interior, and central Gascoyne. Warmun in the east Kimberley recorded 187.0 mm on the 19th, its highest daily fall in summer in 108 years of recording.
Two tropical lows moved through the Kimberley in January bringing a large proportion of the summer rainfall to the region. No tropical cyclones impacted the WA coast during summer 2014-15, however two tropical cyclones were tracked in the WA tropical cyclone region during summer. Tropical cyclones Kate and Bakung moved through the eastern Indian Ocean in December.
- Fourth highest mean maximum temperature on record for WA; third highest on record for Lower Southwest
- Third highest mean minimum temperature on record for WA
- No tropical cyclone impacts on WA

Notes
A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Tuesday 3 March 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
