Western Australia in spring 2015: Warmest spring days on record
When averaged across the State, WA saw its warmest spring days and second warmest spring nights on record in 2015. Spring rainfall was near-average for WA as a whole, but was well below average for the South West Land Division (SWLD).
- Mean maximum temperature: highest for WA and SWLD
- Mean minimum temperature: second highest for WA; highest for SWLD
- Rainfall: near-average for WA; 13th driest for SWLD
Spring 2015 saw below to very much below average rainfall in much of the South West Land Division (SWLD), southwest Gascoyne and far north Kimberley. Several sites in the SWLD recorded their lowest spring rainfall on record, including Cape Leeuwin with 119 years of record, or lowest spring rainfall since at least 1994. Above average spring rainfall was mostly confined to the northern half of the State, with Drysdale River Station in the Kimberley recording its wettest spring on record, whilst a couple of sites in the Pilbara and Central Wheat Belt recorded their wettest spring for at least 30 years. When averaged across the State, rainfall in spring 2015 was near average, however, for the SWLD, it was well below average, and ranked as the 13th driest spring on record. A broad trough across the Kimberley and complex low over southern WA in early November brought thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall to the Kimberley, Central West and Central Wheat Belt, and a number of sites recorded their highest spring daily rainfall on record.
Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average across most of the State in spring 2015, with a large number of sites in the SWLD, Gascoyne, Pilbara, and southern Goldfields observing their warmest spring days on record, including a few sites in the SWLD with over 100 years of record. Averaged across the State, the mean maximum temperature for spring 2015 was the highest since comparable records commenced in 1910, surpassing the previous record set last spring (2014). For the SWLD as a whole, spring 2015 was also the warmest spring on record. A cold start to spring with daily maxima in the low teens in southern parts of the SWLD resulted in the coldest spring day on record at the Southern Cross and Newdegate sites. Temperatures in the low to mid-forties in central WA in late spring saw a few record high spring temperatures in the Gascoyne and Goldfields, whilst temperatures in the mid-forties in late November in the Kimberley, east Pilbara, and Northern Interior saw Curtin Aerodrome record its highest spring temperature on record.
Mean minimum temperatures were above average for most of WA in spring, apart from the Kimberley and adjacent Northern Interior, which saw below average to near average mean minima. WA recorded its second highest mean minimum temperature in spring on record when averaged across the State, whilst for the SWLD as a whole, it was the highest. A number of sites in the SWLD, Gascoyne, Pilbara, and Eucla recorded their highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record. A record cold spring night with daily minima below 2 °C in early September, following low maximum temperatures the previous day, was experienced in the Goldfields early in the season. In late spring, overnight temperatures were frequently in the mid- twenties near the west coast, and in the high twenties to low thirties in the Pilbara and Eucla, and a number of stations recorded their warmest spring night on record.

Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992. |

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 December 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
