- For the South West Land Division, it was the driest summer since 2009-10, and many sites in the Southeast Coastal and Great Southern had their driest summer on record or driest since summer 1997-98
- The southwest Capes region received above average summer rainfall, largely due to single rainfall event from a cut-off low on 23 January; Witchcliffe recorded its highest summer daily rainfall on record with 43.8 mm
Above average temperature for most of WA
- For Western Australia, the mean maximum temperature was 2.52 °C above average, which was the highest on record, exceeding the previous record of 1.99 °C set on summer 2009-10
- The mean minimum temperature was 0.93 °C above average, which was the third-highest on record and highest since summer 2009-10
- Prolong extreme heat was experienced in the north in December and expanded to the south in mid-January, resulted in some summer daily maximum temperature records been broken
- Marble Bar recorded 32 days with temperature at 45 °C or higher during summer, which exceeded previous record of 30 such hot days set in summer 1909-10; whilst its 49.3 °C on 27 December was the highest summer temperature in WA for seven years (previous higher temperature was 49.4 °C at Osbourne on 21 December 2011)
- A number of locations in the Pillara, Kimberley, Goldfields and Southern Interior had their hottest summer on record or hottest summer since 1991 in terms of maximum temperature
- Several locations in the Kimberley, Pillara,Gascone and Great Southern had their highest summer daily minimum temperature on record; Teller in the east Pilbara had its all-time warmest night on record with 33.7°C on Christmas day
Tropical cyclone Riley
- A tropical low was first identified on 22 January to the north of the Kimberley, and was later named Tropical Cyclone Riley early on the 24th when located to the northwest of Broome. Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 March 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
