Western Australia in autumn 2019: very dry in the west, very warm in the north

Autumn rainfall was below average across much of Western Australia, but above average in parts of the Pilbara. Mean seasonal maximum temperatures were above average across most of the State and it was the fourth-warmest autumn on record for WA as a whole. Mean seasonal minimum temperatures were above average apart from the southwest.

Very dry in the west; wet in part of the Pilbara

  • Autumn rainfall was below average for WA; it was the seventh-driest autumn for the South West Land Division (SWLD)
  • It was the fifth-driest year to date (January-May), and driest since 1972 for WA; it was the driest year to date on record for the SWLD since record commenced in 1900
  • Numerous sites in the SWLD and adjacent Central West and Gascoyne districts had their driest autumn on record or driest autumn for at least 30 years with seasonal totals less than 10 mm along the Central West and Gascoyne coast
  • Port Hedland Airport recorded its new autumn daily rainfall record on 24 March during the passage of tropical cyclone Veronica; Hill Spring in the Gascoyne also set its new record on 12 April
  • It was the driest start to the year (January-May) on record for many locations in the SWLD and adjacent Central West district, including sites with over 100 years of rainfall observations; some sites in the Central West district recorded less than 20 mm in total
  • Geraldton Airport received 5.4 mm in the first five months in 2019, and its previous record was 18.8 mm over January-May 1983 at the old Airport site; Northampton (north of Geraldton) with 137 years of rainfall observations, recorded 16.0 mm, replacing its previous record (16.5 mm) set over a century ago in January-May 1914

Very warm in the north

  • Western Australia had its equal sixth-warmest autumn on record in terms of mean temperature (1.34 °C above average)
  • The mean seasonal maximum temperature was 2.01 °C above average, the fourth-warmest autumn on record for WA
  • It was exceptional hot start to autumn in the north, central and southeast of the State, with autumn temperature records first affecting the southeast on 1 March, then the north and central WA on 9 to 11 March
  • Roebourne Aero recorded a maximum temperature of 48.1 °C on 10 March, which is the new national autumn temperature record, exceeding the previous national record of 47.8 °C at Carnarvon Airport on 6 March 2007
  • The mean seasonal minimum temperature was 0.68 °C above average, higher than autumns in 2018 and 2017
  • Some record high autumn minimum temperatures were reported in the north and southeast WA at the start to autumn; Bidyadanga (west Kimberley coast ) recorded a minimum 33.0 °C on 10 March, which was nation's highest autumn minimum temperature for 14 years (33.3 °C on 1 March 2005 at Marble Bar)
  • Some record low autumn temperatures were reported in the south towards the end of autumn on 18 and 19 May
  • The year to date mean maximum temperature was 2.28 °C above average, the second-warmest year to date on record, just behind +2.45 °C in 2005 for WA

Tropical cyclones in autumn

  • Three tropical cyclones developed or moved through the Western Australia region in autumn: Savannah and Veronica in March, and Wallace in April
  • In late March, tropical cyclone Veronica tracked very close to the Pilbara coast (midway between Port Hedland and Karratha) on the 24th then stalled next day before moving westward and weakening. Veronica produced destructive winds and very heavy rainfall along those coastline and adjacent inland. Roebourne Aero recorded 154 km/h wind gust on the 25th. Indee (south of Port Hedland) recorded a daily rainfall 263.4 mm on the 25th

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 pm on Saturday 1 June 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
