Western Australia in winter 2019: very warm days; a dry winter

Daytime temperatures were above average across almost all of Western Australia, and days were very much warmer than the winter average along the west coast, and across the west Kimberley, east Pilbara and Interior districts. It was the second-warmest winter for the Sate as a whole. Rainfall was below average for much of WA.

Below average rainfall for much of WA

  • Rainfall was below average for WA as a whole, largely due to a very dry July
  • Cold fronts produced persistent rains to the South West Land Division (SWLD) in early winter between 7 and 13 June; the wettest winter's day was on the 7th with falls over 80 mm along the southwest coast, and Kalbarri in the Central West had its wettest winter day on record
  • A cold front and associated cloudband produced widespread 30-60 mm rainfall in the SWLD on 5 July; 51.4 mm at Arena in inland Central West was its wettest winter day on record
  • A trio of cold fronts brought widespread moderate to locally heavy falls (up to 70-80 mm) to the SWLD at the end of winter and start of spring
  • Some sites in the Central West district had their wettest winter for at least 20 years

Above average daytime temperatures

  • The mean maximum temperature was 1.64 °C above average for WA, which was the second-warmest winter on record (the record was +2.02 °C in winter 2017)
  • The mean minimum temperature was 0.20 °C above average for WA
  • Broome Airport's mean maximum temperature was 31.2 °C in winter 2019, which was its equal second-warmest winter on record and warmest winter since 1988
  • Many sites near the west coast, especially around Perth had their highest winter temperature on record on the 27th or 28th, covering places from Carnavon Airport down to the southwest corner at Cape Leeuwin, as a result of warm northeastern winds
  • Geraldton Airport recorded 32.0 °C on 28 August, which was the highest winter temperature on record with records commenced in 1941; previous record was 31.7 °C on 10 August 2014 at the current Geraldton Airport

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 7 pm on Sunday 1 September 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
