Western Australia in winter 2020: a dry and very warm winter
Winter was record warm and very dry for Western Australia. Seasonal mean maximum temperatures were well above average for most of the state, with record high temperatures in the northwest and central parts. The statewide winter mean maximum temperature was the highest on record. Seasonal mean minimum temperatures were above average for the southern two-thirds of the state. Rainfall in winter 2020 was below average for most of WA though winter is typically dry in the north. The statewide rainfall was the eighth-driest winter on record, and driest since 2006.
Below average rainfall for most of WA
- It was a very dry winter for Western Australia; the statewide rainfall was 46% below the seasonal average and the eighth-driest winter on record, driest since 2006.
- Rainfall was below average for most of WA, though winter is typically dry in the north.
- Above average rainfall in August lifted winter rainfall totals close to average along the south coast between Albany and Eyre.
- Most of the South West Land Division (SWLD) received below average winter rainfall; it was the tenth-driest winter, and driest since 2014 for the SWLD as a whole.
- Early in August, a cold front and associated low pressure system produced moderate daily rainfall in excess of 30 mm along the state's south coast between the 3rd and 6th, with heavier falls between 80 and 100 mm in and around Albany; several sites had their highest winter daily rainfall on record.
- Eyre (roughly mid-point along the Eucla District coast) recorded 75 mm on 6 August, which almost doubled its previous wettest winter day record, and it also was the wettest day for 9 years since 17 March 2011 when 81.2 mm was recorded.
Well above average daytime temperatures for most of WA
- It was a record warm winter for Western Australia; the statewide seasonal mean temperature was 1.60 °C above average, the highest on record.
- Winter daytime temperatures were above average across the whole state, and very warm in the northwest and central parts; several sites had their warmest winter days on record.
- The state's mean maximum temperature was 2.38 °C above average, which was the warmest winter on record.
- Winter overnight temperatures were above average for the southern two-thirds of the state; the statewide winter mean minimum temperature was 0.81 °C above average.
- The statewide year-to-date mean maximum and minimum temperatures were the second-highest and eighth-highest for the January–August period on record.
- Record high winter temperatures were observed in the Kimberley and Pilbara in late August from the 21st; the extreme heat then expanded to the state's south and south-east covering the eastern SWLD, Goldfields and Southern Interiors from the 28th; some locations exceeded their previous winter record on multiple days.
- West Roebuck (about 10km east of Broome Airport) recorded Australia's highest winter temperature of 41.2 °C on record on 23 August, a day after Yampi Sound (75 km northeast of Derby) recorded the country's first 40 °C ( 40.7 °C on 22 August) for 50 years (40.0 °C at Kulumburu Mission on 27 August 1970); along with 40.1 °C at West Roebuck on the 27th, the country experienced three 40 °C days in winter within a week.
- Port Hedland Airport had 7 out of 9 days exceeding its previous winter record (36.8 °C) between the 23rd and 31st; the maximum temperature on the 29th (39.9 °C ) was 3.1 °C higher than the old record.
- Marble Bar exceeded its winter record (38 °C) on 6 consecutive days between the 24th and 29th; Marble Bar had not recorded a single 38 °C in winter prior to 2017, with records going back to 1901.
Strong winds
- During June, Cape Leeuwin recorded wind gusts in excess of 110 km/h on 4 occasions with the strongest gust being 117km/h (63 knots) on the 17th.
- On 27 July, the passage of a cold front produced strong winds and some damage in the South West Land Division (SWLD). Strong northwesterly winds ahead of the front caused blowing dust through eastern parts of the SWLD. Both Gnowangerup and Manjimup recorded a 83 km/h (45 knot) wind gust, and Cape Leeuwin recorded a gust of 96 km/h (52 knot). Damage was reported in Busselton where a group of 6 units lost its tin roof.
- On 9 August, a strong cold front produced severe winds gusts and a 50–70 cm storm surge along the west coast of WA, though impacts were minimal due to low tides. The highest wind gust was 109 km/h (59 kt) at Cape Naturaliste, as raised dust moved through Gascoyne, and the winds brought downed trees and caused minor roof damage in an area from Kalbarri to Albany, including Perth metropolitan area.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 1 September 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
