Tuesday, 1 December 2020 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC21R0
Western Australia in spring 2020: very warm spring days and nights
Mean maximum and minimum temperatures were above average across almost all of Western Australia this spring. The mean maximum temperature was the fourth-highest on record and the mean minimum temperature was the third-highest on record for spring for WA as a whole. Spring rainfall was close to average for most of the state. Above average rainfall was recorded in a large part of the Kimberley, pockets in the Pilbara and along the Eucla coast, though some areas in the southern and central WA recorded below average spring rainfall.
Wet in the Kimberley
- Spring rainfall was above average for much of the west and north Kimberley, due to moderate to heavy rainfall from thunderstorms in late November.
- After little rain was recorded in September and October, thunderstorms in late spring produced isolated daily rainfall totals of 40–100 mm in the north and west Kimberley; Broome Airport,Theda and Cygnet Bay had their highest spring daily rainfall on record on the 21st or 23rd, and resulted in Broome Airport having its wettest spring.
Very warm at the start and end of spring
- Both spring mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were above average across almost all of WA.
- The WA mean maximum temperature was 2.00 °C above average, the fourth-highest on record for spring, largely due to an equal second-warmest September on record (+2.75 °C) and a ninth-warmest November on record (+1.82 °C).
- The WA mean minimum temperature was 1.44 °C above average, the third-highest on record for spring, largely due to a record warm September (+1.99 °C) and a third-warmest November on record (+1.38 °C)
- Fitzroy Crossing Aero's maximum temperature of 46.5 °C on 13 November equalled its highest spring temperature on record.
- Argyle Aerodrome had its hottest spring on record with a mean temperature of 32.8 °C as it broke both records for spring mean maximum temperature and spring mean minimum temperature.
- Very hot days hit the Central Wheat Belt and Southeast Coast in late spring; Cunderdin Airfield recorded a daily maximum of 44.1 °C on 24 November, its highest spring temperature on record.
- Western Australia's year-to-date mean maximum temperature was the second-highest on record, behind 2019.
- Western Australia's year-to-date mean minimum temperature was the second-highest on record, behind 1998.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 December 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
