Wet on the coast, dry inland
NSW recorded a statewide average rainfall of 463.4 mm during 2013, which is 16% below the historical average of 552.7 mm and the driest year since 2006. The year was generally drier than average in inland NSW but wetter than average along the coast, but only one station broke long-term annual rainfall records. The Murray Darling Basin recorded 370.6 mm of rainfall, well below the historical average of 488.4 mm.
The year started with two very heavy rainfall events in coastal NSW, which broke annual daily rainfall records at several locations and caused widespread coastal flooding. The most significant of these was with the remnants of tropical cyclone Oswald between 27 and 29 January, with daily totals as high as 444 mm at Chillingham (and over 500 mm at some non-Bureau sites – for more information see Special Climate Statement 44). An East Coast Low caused very heavy coastal rainfall between 22 and 24 February, with daily totals as high as 415.2 mm at Yarras. East Coast Lows also produced heavy rainfall in coastal NSW on 20-21 April, 24-25 May, 24-26 June, 12 November, and 17-18 November, with severe thunderstorm activity also contributing to heavy coastal rain during November.
For inland NSW and the Murray Darling Basin, March and June were the only months with above average rainfall during the year, with particularly widespread dry conditions during April, August, October and December. However, there were several heavy rain events during the year, with a cold front causing widespread heavy rain between 28 February and 3 March, including the wettest day on record for Orange. There was also widespread heavy rain on 17 September, including the wettest September day on record for Canberra, while several surface troughs caused well above average rainfall during June, which was the wettest for NSW since 2005.
Highest maximum temperatures on record
The statewide mean temperature for NSW during 2013 was 1.23 °C above the historical average, the second-warmest on record behind 2009 (+1.37 °C). NSW has not experienced a year with statewide average temperatures below the 1961–90 average since 1996. The mean maximum temperature was 1.76 °C above average and the warmest year on record for NSW, while the mean minimum temperature was 0.69 °C above average and the eleventh-warmest on record.
More than 99% of NSW recorded both mean and maximum temperatures in the warmest 10% of years, with most of the state also recording well above average minimum temperatures. Temperatures were particularly warm in western NSW and along the coast, with more than a third of the state recording the warmest year on record for maximum temperatures including Sydney, Cobar, and Broken Hill.
Maximum temperatures were above average during every month of 2013; the last month with below-average maximum temperatures was March 2012. January was the hottest month on record for NSW maximum temperatures, with a widespread heatwave breaking numerous all-time temperature records including Sydney, Williamtown and Tibooburra; for more information on this event see Special Climate Statement 43.
The July-October period was also the warmest on record for NSW, with maximum temperatures 2.9 °C above the historical average and 0.6 °C above the previous record in 2002. The mean maximum temperature in September was 4.7 °C above the historical average, 1.3 °C above the previous record and the second-largest temperature anomaly for any month following November 2009 (+5.1 °C).
Minimum temperatures were also above average for most of the year, particularly during June-September which was the equal-second-warmest such period on record (+1.5 °C). However, nights were cooler than average during the dry months of April and October, with several severe frosts in southeast NSW causing major agricultural damage during October. This was followed by continued cool conditions during November, particularly in the west where rainfall remained low.

Other phenomena
This is a brief summary of major weather events; for more information see the appropriate Monthly Weather Reviews and Special Climate Statements.
Tornadoes and strong winds
There were several tornadoes during the year:
- 21 January - A tornado damaged homes and infrastructure in Ungarie (near Griffith).
- 24 February - Several tornadoes caused damage in the Kiama region, with 12 homes destroyed and more than 70 damaged.
- 21 March - Several tornadoes caused major damage to Barooga/Mulwala on the Victorian border, destroying several homes and a caravan park.
- 18 November - A tornado damaged a shopping centre and train station in Hornsby (northern Sydney), with several minor injuries reported.
- 23 November - Several tornadoes were reported in the Guyra region, tearing the roof from a house in Tenterden.
Strong winds also caused local damage on 13 January, 12 August, 26 September, 1 and 29 October, while numerous severe thunderstorms with large hail impacted coastal NSW during 11-18 and 21-23 November.
East Coast Lows caused heavy rain, coastal flooding, strong winds and heavy seas on 22-24 February, 20-21 April, 24-25 May, 24-26 June and 12 November, while ex-TC Oswald caused coastal damage on 27-29 January and TC Sandra caused strong winds and minor damage at Lord Howe Island on 14 March.
Bushfires
January - Widespread bushfire activity impacted the state during January, with 496 bushfires and grassfires recorded between the 7th and 21st. More than 650 000 hectares were burnt and 58 homes destroyed during these fires, as well as substantial damage to the Siding Spring Observatory.
September - Early season bushfires on the coastal strip destroyed two homes in western Sydney on the 10th and threatened homes in the Taree region on the 26th.
October - Bushfires affected much of the coastal strip during October, the worst fires in NSW (in terms of losses) since the 1960s. The worst fires were in the Blue Mountains during 17-20 October, destroying close to 200 homes, more than 60 000 hectares of bushland, as well as rail, power, and tourism infrastructure. Severe bushfires also caused widespread evacuations and destroyed more than 15 000 hectares near Balmoral between the 17th and 20th, while fires in the Port Stephens area from the 13th also destroyed several homes.

Extremes Maps Records Summaries Important notes the top
Notes
An Annual Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Friday 3 January 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 20 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlier datasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set of years.
