New South Wales in March 2017: Hot in the west, wet in the east

March 2017 was the second-warmest March on record for NSW. Overnight temperatures were the warmest on record, while maximum temperatures were well above average in the west of the state, with very hot weather on the 27th breaking late-season records. Rainfall was well above average in eastern and central NSW, with many stations experiencing record-high numbers of rain days. Ex-tropical cyclone Debbie also brought very heavy rainfall and major flooding to the northeast of the State at the end of the month.

A wet month in the east

  • Rainfall was well above average in central and eastern NSW during March, with the statewide average rainfall 82% above the historical average and the tenth-highest on record
  • Many stations in eastern NSW recorded their wettest March on record, including Glen Innes, Yamba and Grafton
  • Rainfall was persistent throughout the month, with many stations in the east of the State recording the highest number of rain days on record for March
  • The heaviest rain fell at the end of March, as the remnants of tropical cyclone Debbie caused very heavy rainfall in northeast NSW over the 30th and 31st. Two-day totals reached 668 mm at Boat Harbour (Rous River) and several stations recorded their wettest March day on record
  • There were several other heavy rain events during the month, with some additional daily rainfall records set during a period of persistent onshore flow between the 15th and 19th or during thunderstorms on the 21st and 22nd. Notably, New Italy and Grafton both broke their previous March rainfall record on two occasions during the month
  • A low pressure system also produced daily totals of over 100 mm in parts of the South Coast over the 4th and 5th
  • In comparison, rain was below average in far western NSW

Warmest nights on record

  • The statewide average minimum temperature during March was 2.61 °C above average, the warmest March on record
  • Minimum temperatures were in the warmest 10% of years across almost the entire State and the warmest on record across much of the east coast, and many stations including Sydney, Moruya and Bathurst recorded their warmest March nights on record
  • Several stations experienced record numbers of nights above 15 or 20 °C, and some sites had their warmest March night on record on the 20th or 31st
  • Daytime temperatures were the ninth-warmest on record for NSW and 2.04 °C above average, with close to average daytime temperatures associated with the heavy rainfall in eastern NSW but well above average temperatures in the west, where some stations recorded their warmest March days on record
  • Days were warmer than average in western NSW for most of the month but particularly warm on the 27th when temperatures reached 44.0 °C at Wilcannia. This is the highest temperature ever recorded in NSW so late in the season, and 3 °C warmer than the previous late-season record of 40.9 °C at Fowlers Gap on 27 March 2013
  • The statewide mean temperature was consequently the second-warmest on record for March behind the record set last year.

Severe weather and flooding

  • Thunderstorms and showers caused locally heavy rainfall during the month, with 2cm hail reported in Dubbo and Gulgong from storms on the 13th and flash flooding near Lismore and Coffs Harbour on the 15th, in the Illawarra on the 16th, in the Northern Rivers including Murwillumbah and Bellinger on the 18th-19th, and in Parkes on the 20th
  • A front on the 27th caused wind gusts of up to 102 km/h at Wagga Wagga and 109 km/h at Khancoban, with reports of wind damage in Wagga Wagga and Albury-Wodonga
  • Ex-tropical cyclone Debbie produced very heavy rainfall in the northeast of the State over the 30th and 31st. Multi-day totals reached 668 mm at Boat Harbour (Rous River), while Lismore recorded 324.8 mm of rain in the 18 hours to 3am on the 31st, its wettest March day in more than 100 years of record. The heavy rain, following above-average rainfall throughout the month, caused major flooding in the Richmond, Wilsons and Tweed rivers, with up to 20,000 people evacuated from Lismore

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 8 am on Monday 3 April 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

From 2017, information about Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
