New South Wales in July 2017: warm days, cool nights

New South Wales was warm and dry during July, with above average daytime temperatures but colder than average nights. It was the driest July since 2002, as well as the coldest since 2002 for minimum temperatures. Maximum temperatures were the warmest since 2002, and the second-warmest July on record.

Dry winter conditions continue

  • Statewide rainfall for July was the lowest since 2002, at about 70% below the long-term July average
  • It was particularly dry across central inland New South Wales, and along coastal regions from Bateman's Bay to north of Newcastle, where rainfall was in the lowest 10% of July totals
  • These dry conditions are a continuation of the below average rainfall recorded in June: the July and June–July rainfall totals for the State are the driest since 2002, more than 50% below the average
  • Some sites reported their lowest July rainfall totals on record, with most stations away from the Alpine regions receiving less than 20% of their monthly average
  • The highest rainfall for the State fell around the Snowy Mountains, with moderate totals also reported in the north east from localised thunderstorm activity under a slow-moving trough in the middle of the month

Warm days across much of the state

  • Daytime temperatures were above average to very much above average across most of the State for July: many stations recorded their warmest July mean maximum temperatures on record
  • The average maximum temperature for New South Wales was 2.28 °C above average, making this the second-warmest July on record for daytime temperatures
  • Above average temperatures were recorded across the entire month: statewide daytime temperatures were above average for all but four days in July
  • The last weekend in July in particular saw record-breaking temperatures, with daytime temperature records reported at many long-term sites across New South Wales, from Goulburn and Griffith in the south to Walgett and Mungindi in the north

Cold nights continue inland

  • Minimum temperatures on the other hand were below average, particularly in the central regions where clear skies led to cold nights
  • Several stations in the south and east of the State reported their coldest mean minimum temperatures on record: Bega for example, reported a record 12 consecutive nights below 0 °C from 6–17 July
  • Overnight temperatures were 0.44 °C below average for the State as a whole, the coldest July nights since 2002
  • Conditions were particularly chilly at the start of the month, when several stations in the south recorded their coldest July night on record

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 August 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

From 2017, information about Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
