New South Wales in November 2017: warmer than average overall and thunderstorms throughout

November in New South Wales received average rainfall overall, with warmer than average temperatures. Most regions experienced thunderstorms during the month, as easterly winds brought moist tropical air across the State.

Average rainfall overall with an active thunderstorm season

  • Rainfall was around average for the State overall, 6% above the long-term mean
  • Above average totals were recorded in parts of the Lower Western and Riverina districts, the South Coast, and patches of the north west; slightly below average totals were recorded west of Sydney into the Hunter District, and in pockets of the north and west
  • The highest totals were recorded in the Northern Rivers district; over 200 mm of rainfall were recorded at Ballina and Mullumbimby for the month, including 89 mm in 60 minutes at Ballina on the 5th
  • The driest location was Winnathee in the State's far west, with 0.6 mm
  • Thunderstorms and associated heavy falls were observed across the State throughout the month; reports included golf-ball sized hail in the Northern Rivers and Hunter Valley regions, flash flooding in the central west, and tornadoes around the Riverina
  • Some sites in the east had their highest November daily rainfall on record in the 24 hours to 9am on the 18th

A cool start but warm finish

  • Maximum and minimum temperatures were above average in south and west of the State, but below average along the northeast coast into the Hunter and Northern Tablelands districts as a result of persistent easterly flow
  • The State maximum temperature was 1.25 °C above average, very similar to last year (1.26 °C)
  • The mean minimum temperature was 1.37 °C above average, and more than 1.5 °C warmer than the cool nights of November 2016
  • While the month ended warmer than average, a number of stations in the east experienced record long runs of consecutive days below 25 °C from early in the month: Armidale had 16 consecutive days below 22 °C, while many other stations in the Illawarra, Metropolitan and the Hunter districts experienced more than two weeks without a day over 25 °C, or a night above 15 °C

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 December 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
