Tuesday, 3 April 2018 - Monthly Climate Summary for New South Wales - Product code IDCKGC15R0
New South Wales in March 2018: drier and warmer than average in most districts
March rainfall totals were below average across much of the State, despite very heavy rain at times in the Hunter and Mid North Coast districts. Mean daytime temperatures were warmer than average throughout the State during March, while mean overnight temperatures were warmer than average across northern districts.
Drier than average in most areas
- March rainfall was 37% below average for New South Wales as a whole
- Rainfall totals were below average across most of southern New South Wales, including areas of very much below average rainfall in Western districts, the Central and Southern Tablelands as well as small patches of the South Coast
- From the 21st, a coastal trough off the Mid North Coast, with a strong high pressure system over the Tasman Sea feeding in humid, easterly winds, resulted in intense rainfall in the Hunter and Mid North Coast districts
- The heaviest falls were along the Macleay, Hastings, and Camden Haven Rivers with some locations receiving more than 300 mm in three days from the 22nd to the 24th
- A few sites had their highest March daily rainfall on record
- Forster-Tuncurry and Taylors Arm had their highest total March rainfall for at least 30 years
- Several sites had their lowest total March rainfall on record, with many more sites having their lowest total March rainfall since the 1990s
Warmer than average
- For New South Wales as a whole, it was the seventh-warmest March on record, with a mean temperature that was 1.86 °C above average
- The State's mean maximum temperature was 2.39 °C above average for March
- Daytime temperatures were warmer than average in all areas of the State
- Days were very much warmer than average throughout central New South Wales, around Sydney, and in the far south of the South Coast
- On 18 March, daily maximum temperatures were more than 12 °C warmer than average in an area from Sydney south along the Illawarra and South Coast districts, with several sites having their highest March temperature on record
- Combined with wind gusts in excess of 80 km/h at many locations, the conditions resulted in severe fire danger ratings, with total fire bans declared across much of the State on the 18th
- Such significant fire weather conditions during the second half of March are unusual for New South Wales
- Inland, the strong winds associated with the cold front on the 18th created dust storms in parts of the Riverina Districts, and further east in areas around Wagga Wagga and Young
- The State's mean minimum temperature was 1.32 °C above average for March
- Night time temperatures were close to or slightly below average across southern New South Wales
- Nights were very much warmer than average around Sydney and in parts of the Upper Darling, Central Western Plains and Slopes, Northwest Plains, Hunter, and North Coast Districts
- On the 26th and 27th, a large high pressure system brought clear skies and low humidity to southern New South Wales, resulting in many sites having their coldest night of the year and some sites having their lowest March temperature on record
- Many sites had either their highest March mean daily maximum temperature on record or their highest March mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years, with several sites exceeding records from 1998
- On the 3rd, Inverell (Raglan St) had its warmest March night on record
- Yamba had its highest March mean daily minimum temperature since 1956
- Several sites had either their highest March mean temperature on record or their highest March mean temperature since at least 1998

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 3 April 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
