New South Wales in April 2018: warmest April on record
April was the State's warmest on record, with both daytime and overnight temperatures very much above average across most of New South Wales. Rainfall during April was below average across most of New South Wales, making it the State's driest since 2005.
Drier than average
- Rainfall in April was 73% below average for New South Wales as a whole, the lowest total in April since 2005
- Rainfall was below average across most of the State, including large areas of very much below average rainfall in western and southern New South Wales, and in coastal areas south of Sydney
- Little or no rain fell in much of the western half of the State
- Many sites had either their lowest total April rainfall on record or their lowest total April rainfall for at least 20 years
Warmest April on record
- For New South Wales as a whole, the mean temperature was 3.30 °C warmer than average, exceeding the previous April record of +3.20 °C from 2005
- Days were warmer than average throughout New South Wales during April
- Mean maximum temperatures across most of southern and western New South Wales were highest on record for April
- Overnight temperatures were slightly closer to average, but were still warmer than average throughout the State
- Mean minimum temperatures were very much above average across most of New South Wales, with isolated patches of highest on record in the Far Northwest district and around Sydney
- In the first half of the month, several sites across central and eastern parts of the Murray Darling Basin exceeded their previous records for long runs of consecutive days of 30 °C or above during April (including Grenfell, which had 13 consecutive days, exceeding the previous record for April of four such days in 1986)
- Many sites had their highest April temperature on record, mainly between the 9th and 11th
- Many of those same sites went on to have their highest April mean daily maximum temperature on record
- Between the 12th and 14th, many sites had their warmest April night on record
- Many sites, particularly across eastern New South Wales, had either their highest April mean daily minimum temperature on record or their highest April mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years
- A large number of sites across New South Wales had their highest April mean temperature on record

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 May 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
