New South Wales in May 2018: below average rainfall and warm days
Rainfall during May was below average in all districts except parts of the Southern Tablelands. Overall, the mean temperature was slightly warmer than average, with daytime temperatures warmer than average and overnight temperatures slightly cooler than average.
Much drier than average
- Rainfall during May was 75% below average, making it the seventh-driest on record and driest May since 2006
- May continued a run of five consecutive drier than average months for New South Wales as a whole
- Most of northern New South Wales received less than 20% of its May monthly average rainfall
- During the third week of May, a strong high pressure system centred south of Australia blocked cold fronts from affecting New South Wales and maintained cool and dry conditions over the State
- Numerous sites had either their lowest total May rainfall on record or their lowest total May rainfall for at least 20 years
Warmer than average days, slightly cooler than average nights
- The mean temperature for New South Wales as a whole was 0.48 °C warmer than average
- Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average throughout the State, including areas of very much above average in southern and eastern districts
- The mean maximum temperature for the State as a whole was 1.31 °C warmer than average
- Overnight temperatures across New South Wales were average to cooler than average, with the State's overall mean minimum temperature for May 0.34 °C below average
- A complex low pressure system brought cold temperatures on 11 May across much of southeastern Australia, including New South Wales
- There were sheep graziers' warnings issued for parts of inland New South Wales for cold temperatures, rain, and westerly winds, with several centimetres of snow reported in the Central Tablelands and the alpine resorts
- Snow also fluttered down on the runway at Orange Airport during the morning of the 11th
- Several sites along the South Coast recorded wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h on the morning of the 12th
- On the 3rd, many sites had their highest May temperature on record
- On the 4th, some sites had their warmest May night on record
- Bega AWS had a mean minimum temperature of 4.2 °C, its lowest May mean daily minimum temperature on record, however the old Bega (Newtown Road) site had several colder Mays in earlier years including a mean minimum of 2.1 °C in May 1917

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Friday 1 June 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
