New South Wales in June 2018: dry in parts of the north

June rainfall was below average in many areas of the State, including the northeast inland of the Great Dividing Range and in parts of the northwest. June was wetter than average in coastal parts of the Hunter and Manning districts, and moderate falls late in the month saw a wetter than average June in the Upper Darling. Days tended to be warmer than average in central and northeastern parts of the State. Nights were cooler than average across much of western and southwestern New South Wales under generally clear skies.

Drier than average in parts of the north

• June rainfall was 31% below average for New South Wales as a whole, continuing a run of six consecutive drier than average months for the State
• Rainfall totals for the first three weeks were less than 50% of the monthly average across most of northern New South Wales
• Moderate falls during the last few days of June across much of central and coastal New South Wales brought their monthly totals up close to average
• Brewarrina, east of Bourke, recorded a two-day total of 67 mm on the 27th and 28th, which was the highest two-day total at the site during June since 1948
• June rainfall totals remained below to very much below average in the Upper Darling district and across the Northwest Slopes and Plains and the Northern Tablelands inland of the Great Dividing Range
• North of Newcastle, Smiths Lake had its highest total June rainfall on record and Nelson Bay had its highest total June rainfall since 1960
• In the State's northeast, a few sites had their lowest total June rainfall on record and many more had their lowest total June rainfall for at least 20 years

Warmer than average days; cool nights in the west

• Daytime temperatures were warmer than average through central and northeastern parts of State, but close to average in western and eastern districts
• The mean maximum temperature for New South Wales as a whole was 0.75 °C warmer than average
• June continued a run of 14 consecutive months of warmer than average daytime temperatures for the State since April 2017 when the state-wide averaged mean maximum temperature was 0.11 °C below average
• Overnight temperatures during June were cooler than average across much of the western half of the State, but were generally average to warmer than average in the east
• The mean minimum temperature for New South Wales was near-average
• On the 12th, Coonamble had its highest June temperature on record
• On the 26th, Broken Hill Airport had its coldest June day on record and a week earlier on the 19th, the same site had its lowest June temperature on record

Severe winds and snow

• Thredbo AWS had several days with maximum wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h in early and mid-June
• The strongest wind gust recorded in the State during the month was 141 km/h at Thredbo AWS on the 8th, its strongest in June since 143 km/h was recorded on 21 June, 2011
• More than 70 cm of snow fell across alpine areas during the middle of the month
• Snow depth at the Spencer's Creek Snow Course was 76.4 cm on 18 June, which was its deepest snow in June since 2014
