New South Wales in November 2018: wet with warm nights

November rainfall was above average for many parts of southern, central, and western New South Wales, but it was a dry month in the State's northeast. Daytime temperatures for November were close to average across most of New South Wales, but were above average in parts of the south and northeast. Night time temperatures were above average for most of New South Wales, including small areas of very much above average in the Upper Western and South Coast districts.

Heavy rain at times

• Rainfall in November was above average in areas of two large bands extending from west to east covering southern and central New South Wales
• For the State as a whole, November rainfall was 9% above average
• Heavy rainfall associated with thunderstorms across Sydney and the Illawarra on the 29th resulted in localised flash flooding
• For the State as a whole, the wettest day was on the 8th, when almost half of the State recorded daily totals in excess of 10 mm
• After two wet months in the Northern Rivers district, November was drier than average for the area
• Several sites in the Illawarra and Snowy Mountains had November totals in excess of 200 mm, with 275.2 mm at Beaumont (The Cedars) the highest monthly total recorded in the State
• The lowest totals were in western areas of the Upper Western district, where White Cliffs (Mt Jack) had 11.4 mm and White Cliffs AWS had 16.6 mm for the month
• On the 28th and 29th, a number of sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record and Alectown (Bridgewater) had its highest total November rainfall since 1971
• Several sites in the State's northeast had their lowest total November rainfall for at least 20 years

Warm temperatures

• Daytime temperatures for November were close to average across most of New South Wales
• Mean maximum temperatures were above average in southern parts of the Riverina, the South Coast, and in the State's northeast over much of the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands, and Mid North Coast districts
• Daytime temperatures were slightly cooler than average in parts of the Western districts
• The State's mean maximum temperature for November was 0.77 °C above average
• Night time temperatures were above average across most of New South Wales, including small areas of very much above average in the Upper Western and South Coast districts
• The State's mean minimum temperature for November was 1.49 °C above average
• On the 7th, two sites had their coldest November day (lowest maximum temperature) on record
• Early in the month, a number of sites had their warmest November night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record

Strong winds at times

• Wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h were recorded at sites across the State during November
• The strongest wind gust recorded in the State during November was 133 km/h at Thredbo AWS on the morning of the 2nd
