New South Wales in January 2019: warmest month on record

January was the warmest month on record for New South Wales as a whole. The mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures were all the highest on record and exceeded previous respective records by a significant margin. Statewide, rainfall during the month was below average and particularly dry in the northeast and southern inland regions.

Warmest January on record

  • Statewide, the mean, maximum and minimum temperature for January were all the highest on record, with the largest positive anomalies reported for any State (or Territory) for any month
  • The record warmth was associated with heatwaves that affected large areas of the country; further information on these heatwaves can be found in the Special Climate Statement Widespread heatwaves during December 2018 and January 2019
  • The mean temperature for the State as a whole was 5.86 °C above average, exceeding the previous January record of +3.79 °C from 1939
  • Around 90% of the State experienced their warmest January on record (in terms of mean temperatures) except for some large areas in the southwest and the far northeast that reported very much above average (in the warmest 10% of historical observations)
  • The State's mean maximum temperature was 6.15 °C above average (previous record was +4.11 °C in 1939)
  • Overnight temperatures were 5.56 °C above average (previous record was +3.83 °C in 2006)
  • Many locations across the State reported their highest January mean temperature, highest January mean daily maximum temperature and highest January mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • The January mean daily maximum temperature of 43.5 °C at Wanaaring Post Office is the hottest ever recorded in New South Wales with standard equipment
  • There were some very warm days and nights across the State throughout the month; numerous locations west of the Great Dividing Range reported their highest January temperature on record and their warmest January night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record
  • Temperatures in the 24 hours to 9am on the 26th at Wanaaring (Borrona Downs) did not drop below 36.6 °C, making it the highest minimum temperature ever recorded in Australia. The previous national record of 35.5 °C was also exceeded on the 18th at Noona and Wanaaring (Borrona Downs) (for more details see the daily extremes table)
  • NSW had 5 consecutive days with the Statewide averaged daily maximum temperature was 40 °C or higher from the 14 to 18 January; second only to 1939 when there were 8 consecutive days
  • Numerous sites in western regions observed a record number of consecutive hot days. Bourke Airport experienced 21 consecutive days of 40 °C or above from the 9th to 29th; a new State record, exceeding 17 consecutive days at Bourke Post Office from in January 1939

Dry month overall

Severe thunderstorms and dust

  • Severe thunderstorms produced wind gusts of 109 km/h at Temora Airport in the southern Central West Slopes and Plains district on the 7th
  • On the 8th, a severe dust storm blanketed large areas of the Riverina district in southern New South Wales as a broad low pressure trough moved across western regions
  • A surface trough tracking across the State in the last few days of the month generated a wind gust of 115 km/h at Thredbo on the 31st

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Friday 1 February 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
