New South Wales in April 2019: fifth-warmest April on record; dry in the east and wet in the northwest

It was the State's fifth-warmest April on record, with both the daytime and overnight temperatures very much warmer than average. Rainfall was below average across most of New South Wales, though above average across much of the western districts.

Fifth-warmest April on record

  • For New South Wales as a whole, the mean temperature was 1.97 ºC warmer than average; fifth-warmest on record
  • The mean maximum temperature for the State was 2.11 ºC warmer than average and seventh-warmest on record
  • The mean minimum temperature for New South Wales was 1.83 ºC warmer than average and seventh-warmest on record
  • A few hot days occurred on the 8th and 9th as a surface trough directed warm air from central Australia across much of the State; several sites along the northern half of the coast reported early season records with their warmest April day and/or warmest April night on record
  • Wagga Wagga AMO had its highest April mean daily minimum temperature since 1990
  • The first four months of 2019 have been record warm for the State in terms of minimum and mean temperatures, and second-warmest on record for daytime temperatures (behind January to April 2018)

Dry across much of the State

  • April rainfall was 58% below average for New South Wales as a whole, though areas in the Upper and Lower Western districts, with the exception of the south west, experienced above average rainfall
  • Heavy falls over the Easter weekend (due to a low pressure tough and associated cold front) saw some sites have a record wet April day on the 22nd
  • Rainfall across the northwest corner of the State resulted in some sites within drought affected areas of the Upper Western district have their wettest April on record or wettest April since 1990
  • Much of the eastern half of the State experienced a very dry April with some sites recording their driest April on record or driest April for many decades
  • It has been drier than normal for New South Wales for the first four months of 2019, especially in the northeast of the State

Thunderstorms

  • Thunderstorm associated with a cold front that tracked across the State on the 9th impacted the Mid North Coast and Hunter districts

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 1 May 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
