New South Wales in July 2019: Warm July days and below average rainfall
New South Wales was warm and dry during July. Daytime temperatures were well above average making it the State's sixth-warmest July on record. Overnight temperatures were also above average for most parts of the State. A lack of significant rainfall events resulted below average July rainfall.
Drier than average across most of the State
- Rainfall across New South Wales was generally below average, particularly across the tablelands and western slopes and plains districts, which received very much below average rainfall; parts of the southwest and northeast of the State recorded average rainfall
- Overall, rainfall was 64% below the July average for New South Wales; this continues the run of drier than average July's for the State with 2018 and 2017 the fifth and ninth-driest July's on record respectively
- Onshore winds produced moderate showers along the east coast on the 5th, with more widespread shower activity over much of the State on the 8th as a pre-frontal trough and cold front tracked across southeast Australia
- For much of the month, few rain-bearing systems crossed New South Wales, with high pressure systems the dominant influence on the State's weather
- Point Lookout in the State's northeast had its highest July daily rainfall on record, with 40.6 mm of rainfall recorded for the 24 hours to 9 am on the 6th, and its highest total July rainfall on record; Meldrum (Coolawarrah) had its highest total July rainfall for at least 20 years
- Armidale (Tree Group Nursery) had its lowest total July rainfall on record while other sites had their lowest total July rainfall for at least 20 years
- It was the fifth-lowest year to date (January-July) rainfall for New South Wales, but not as low as for the same period last year
Warmer days and nights
- The mean maximum temperature for New South Wales as a whole was 2.17 °C warmer than the July average and the sixth-warmest on record
- Parts of the south coast and northeast of the State, excluding the far northeast corner, recorded the warmest mean daytime temperatures on record for July
- Dubbo Airport recorded their highest July temperature on record, reaching 23.1 °C on the 22nd
- Many sites had their highest July mean daily maximum temperature on record or their highest July mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years
- Minimum temperatures for New South Wales as a whole were also above average for July, with the statewide average being 1.67 °C warmer than normal for July
- Very much above average overnight temperatures were recorded across large parts of the west of the State, whereas in the north they were closer to average
- Montague Island Lighthouse and Inverell (Raglan St) had their highest July mean daily minimum temperature on record
- As a result of the warmer days and nights, several sites also had their highest July mean temperature on record or their highest July mean temperature for at least 20 years
- For the year to date period, January to July, New South Wales was warmest on record for mean temperatures (+2.11 °C), easily beating the record set last year (+1.72 °C), and second warmest on record for mean minimum (+1.93 °C) and mean maximum (+2.29 °C) temperatures
Strong winds, snow and hazardous surf
- A series of cold fronts moved through the State between the 11th and 15th of the month, bringing particularly cool and windy conditions to large parts of the southeast of the State; Thredbo (in the Snowy Mountains) recorded a maximum wind gust of 131 km/hr on the 14th
- The cold and windy outbreak during the middle of the month brought blizzard conditions and snowfall to the Alpine regions, with around 1 m of snow falling across the Alps; light falls were also reported in the central and southern ranges on the 13th
- Hazardous surf conditions were experienced along the northern parts of the coast during the first week of July, during the middle of month for the New South Wales coast north of Batemans Bay, and again for the northern parts of the coast on the 31st

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Thursday 1 August 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
