New South Wales in August 2019: Very dry in most areas, warm days, cold nights

Rainfall totals for much of NSW were very much below average, though some places about the coast received average to above average rainfall. Mean maximum temperatures were very much above average in the northeast, while minimum temperatures were generally very much below average.

One of the driest Augusts on record

  • Rainfall across NSW was generally very much below average during August, with a few sites having their driest August on record and many more having their driest August since 1995
  • The State average rainfall was 77% below average, the fifth-lowest on record and the lowest since the record dry 1995
  • Moderate to heavy rain around Sydney and the Hunter in the final few days of the month gave above average August totals there, with a few sites having their highest total August rainfall since 1998
  • Rainfall was close to average in coastal areas north of the Illawarra Coast, with some places including the Yamba Pilot Station reaching higher than average rainfall totals
  • High pressure systems over the south of the country have suppressed rainfall during the month
  • Rainfall for the year to date has been below average over most of New South Wales, with areas of record low in the northeast

Warmer days in the northeast, but many cold nights

  • Mean maximum temperatures were warmer than average in the east and northeast, and very much above average in the northeast quarter
  • Average maximum temperatures in the south and west of the State were generally close to average
  • There were some very cold nights during the month, with a few sites having their lowest August temperature on record
  • Minimum temperatures were very much below average apart from near the coast and in the northeast, with some sites having their lowest August mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • The State's mean maximum temperature was 1.09 °C above average but the mean minimum temperature was 0.55 °C below average, giving an overall mean temperature 0.27 °C above average
  • A cold outbreak brought cold days from the 8th to the 13th, and on the 10th a few sites with short records had their coldest August day on record
  • Temperatures for the year to date have been above average over most of New South Wales, with areas of record high mean maximum temperature in the east

Snow

  • Cold outbreaks brought snow to many elevated areas, with moderate falls in the highlands
  • A significant cold outbreak in brought snow to the Alps from about 7 August, and by 10 and 11 August many locations above about 600 m received snow, including Orange, Guyra, Lithgow, Canberra, the Barrington Tops and the Blue Mountains
  • Over a metre of snow fell at Spencers Creek during the month, mostly between the 6th and the 13th

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 2 September 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
