New South Wales in September 2019: Warm and dry inland

Much of inland New South Wales was warm and dry in September. Daytime maximum temperatures were 3 to 4 degrees above average in the northeast, and much of the state received less than 20% of its average monthly rainfall. In contrast, the Sydney and Hunter regions received above average rainfall

Dry conditions in the interior, but above average rainfall along the coast

  • Rainfall for the month was below average across most of the New South Wales interior, with most of the west and northeast receiving less than 10 mm, less than 20% of the monthly average
  • Monthly rainfall averaged across New South Wales was about 63% below average, although it was above average in the Sydney and Hunter regions
  • Some sites in the northeast had their lowest total September rainfall on record or the lowest total September rainfall for at least 20 years
  • A cold front crossed the east of the state from the 16th to 18th. Parts of the Sydney and Hunter regions recorded 50 to 100 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 18th
  • State rainfall for January to September 2019 has been 50% of the average, the fifth-driest year-to-date on record

Warm days across the state, cool nights inland

  • Daytime maximum temperatures were above average over most of the state, and were 3 to 4 °C above average in the northeast. However, no long-term sites (those with at least 20 years of data) set monthly records
  • For New South Wales as a whole the monthly mean maximum temperature was 2.73 °C above average, the seventh-warmest on record
  • The clear skies and dry conditions meant that much of inland New South Wales had below average night time minimum temperatures for the month. In contrast, the coastal region from Sydney to the Hunter Valley experienced above average minimum temperatures
  • Parkes Airport had a lowest September temperature on record with -4.0 °C on the 4th, and Armidale recorded its lowest September mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • January to September monthly maximum and mean temperatures are the warmest year-to-date on record for New South Wales, exceeding 2018. Year-to-date minimum temperatures are the second-warmest on record after 2016

Bushfires in the northeast

  • Maximum temperatures on the 5th and 6th were more than 10 °C above average in some areas of northeast of the state
  • The warm temperatures combined with very low humidity and gusty winds resulted in the fire weather index for the 6th being the highest measured for any September since 1950 over much of the northeast
  • By the 9th, more than 50 fires were active in New South Wales, covering tens of thousands of hectares and destroying several properties
  • Special Climate Statement 71 gives further information about the severe fire weather conditions at the start of the month

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 October 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
