New South Wales in March 2021: A very wet and cool month with extensive flooding

March was a very wet month in New South Wales, particularly along the coast, which resulted in record daily rainfall and widespread flooding. Daytime temperatures were below average throughout the State.

A very wet month for all but the southwest

  • Very heavy rainfall during the middle of the month resulted in the second-wettest March on record for New South Wales after 1956, and the wettest month since January 1995.
  • Rainfall for March was 154% above the long-term average.
  • Rainfall was above average in all regions except the southwest of the State.
  • Numerous sites in the Hunter and Mid North Coast districts recorded 7-day rainfall totals (through to 24 March) in excess of 600 mm, and a few in excess of 800 mm.
  • Parts of the North West Slopes and Plains forecast district along with coastal New South Wales, extending from Nambucca Heads to the Central Coast were wettest on record for March.
  • Western Sydney along with adjacent regions of the Central Tablelands forecast district were also wettest on record.
  • Along with regions of highest on record, areas with at least three times the March average extended across parts of the Upper Western district, much of the Slopes and Plains districts and small parts of the Riverina and Northern Tablelands.
  • Rainfall resulted from a split-flow blocking high pressure system in the Tasman Sea and a low-pressure system off northwest Australia which fed moist tropical air into eastern Australia.
  • A large number sites across northern and eastern New South Wales had their highest March daily rainfall on record, with nine of these having an observation period of 50 years or more.
  • A very large number sites across northern and eastern New South Wales also had their highest March monthly rainfall on record, with six of these having an observation period of more than 100 years and an additional 16 with an observation period of more than 50 years.

Very cool days and cool nights in the central west

Flooding during the month

  • Flooding occurred in most coastal catchments and on some northern New South Wales inland rivers, reaching record heights at some points on the Hastings River.
  • The Hawkesbury-Nepean experienced its most significant flooding for more than 30 years.
  • Across eastern New South Wales, major flooding occurred in the Clarence, Nambucca, Manning/Gloucester, Hastings, Camden Haven, Paterson/Williams and Hawkesbury-Nepean rivers and Wollombi Brook.
  • In northern inland New South Wales, major flooding occurred along the Gwydir, Mehi and Macintyre rivers.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 1 April 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
