New South Wales in May 2021: dry with cool nights

New South Wales in May saw below average rainfall except for the south-east. Clear skies and the dry conditions meant that nights in inland areas were at least 1 °C below average. Daytime temperatures were above average in the south-west and close to average elsewhere.

Below average rain

  • New South Wales in May saw below average rain in most areas except the south-east.
  • Averaged over the state 27.7 mm of rain fell during May, 43% below the 1961–1990 average.
  • For western areas less than 10 mm of rain was recorded during May, 60 to 80% below average.
  • A cold front and low pressure system combined with a coastal surface trough to bring moderate to locally heavy falls along the coast from the 4th to 6th, particularly in the South Coast region.
  • A cold front brought further heavy rain to the South Coast on the 11th.
  • Some South Coast and ACT sites had their highest May daily rainfall on record.
  • A number of South Coast sites had their highest total May rainfall on record or for at least 20 years.

Cool nights

  • May mean temperature for the state overall was 0.10 °C above the 1961–1990 average, about half a degree cooler than most of the last decade.
  • Daytime temperatures were close to average across most of the state, but around 1 °C above average in the far south-west.
  • Deniliquin Airport AWS had its highest May mean daily maximum temperature on record
  • Nights were particularly cool in inland areas, with the May mean minimum temperature at least 1 °C below average.
  • A slow moving high pressure system brought an extended period of settled weather in the middle of the month with particularly cool nights.
  • Minimum temperatures for the 16th to the 20th were over 4 °C below the May average in some inland areas.
  • Sydney (Observatory Hill) had 5 nights (16th to the 20th) at or below 9 °C, the earliest such instance in 66 years (15 to 22 May 1955).
  • Canberra Airport recorded -5.4 °C on the 16th, the earliest occurrence of a -5 °C night there since 2011.
  • Nights were even cooler at the end of the month, on the 30th several sites had their lowest May temperature on record.

Tasman low

  • A deep low-pressure system was in the Tasman Sea off the Illawarra and Sydney coast over the 24th to the 26th.
  • This brought damaging surf conditions to parts of the Sydney Coast, with waves of 5 to 10 metres reported.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 June 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
