Friday, 3 December 2021 - Monthly Climate Summary for New South Wales - Product code IDCKGC15R0
New South Wales in November 2021: wettest on record
It was the wettest November on record for New South Wales, with most inland areas of the state receiving more than three times the monthly average. It was the coolest November since 1999 with frequent cloudy periods and a cool outbreak in the middle of the month. The passage of multiple troughs with heavy rain resulted in saturated catchments and river flooding in many areas.
Wettest on record
- New South Wales had its wettest November since national records began in 1900.
- Averaged across the state, 132.0 mm of rain fell in November, nearly three times the 1961–1990 average of 44.8 mm.
- The previous wettest November was in 1917, when 120.2 mm fell across the state.
- Most areas saw very much above average rain (wettest 10% of all years since 1900 for that area).
- Areas that had their wettest November on record include the Central and Southern Tablelands, the South West Slopes and the Australian Capital Territory.
- A large number sites had their highest total November rainfall on record or their highest for at least 20 years.
- The Bathurst Agricultural Station November total rainfall of 242.4 mm is the highest for any month in 114 years of site data.
- Pooncarie Mail Agency in the far west recorded 146.1 mm of rain in November, almost seven times the monthly average and the highest for November in 140 years of site data.
- The wet conditions in November came from multiple troughs that crossed the state.
- This was primarily driven by a lingering negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and a developing La Niña in the tropical Pacific, providing sources of moist tropical air.
- This was enhanced by a persistent positive phase of the South Annualar Mode (SAM) and low pressure over eastern Australia, allowing the moist tropical air to extend over the state.
Coolest this century
- It was the coolest November for New South Wales since 1999, with the mean temperature 0.50 °C below the 1961–1990 average.
- Daytime temperatures were at least 2 °C below average over much of the state except for the north-east.
- For the state as a whole, the mean maximum temperature was 2.05 °C below the 1961–1990 average, the 10th coolest November since national records began in 1910.
- Many sites had their lowest November mean daily maximum temperature on record or their lowest since at least 1999.
- Many sites also had their lowest November mean temperature on record or their lowest since at least 1999.
- A cold outbreak in the middle of the month saw several sites have their coldest November day on record.
- With a maximum of 12.9 °C on the 12th Balranald (RSL) had its coldest November day in 114 years of records at the site.
- Thredbo AWS had a maximum temperature of -1.9 °C on the 14th, the fourth-coldest maximum temperature ever recorded in November in New South Wales.
- Nights were relatively mild, with the mean minimum temperature for the state as a whole 1.03 °C above the 1961–1990 average.
- Night-time temperatures were generally above average along the coast, particularly in the north-east, but close to average in the west of the state.
- There were cold nights in the middle of the month in alpine areas, and Thredbo AWS had its lowest November mean daily minimum temperature since 1999.
Heavy rains and floods
- Troughs crossing New South Wales brought heavy rain on several occasions in November.
- A number of sites had their highest November daily rainfall on record during these events.
- This caused flooding on several inland rivers and many water storages were at full capacity.
- Daily totals of 25 to 50 mm were recorded across the Central and Southern Tablelands in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 12th, with totals up to 70 mm around Orange and Bathurst.
- This resulted in moderate to major flooding along the Lower Lachlan River, particularly affecting Forbes.
- 40 to 70 mm fell across the Northern Tablelands in the 24 hours to 9am on the 21st, with the highest totals reported around Inverell.
- Totals of more than 50 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 22nd were recorded further south around Gunnedah and Coonabarabran, and up to 100 mm in the Dividing Range, resulting in major flooding along the Namoi River at Gunnedah.
- Most inland areas west of the Dividing Range had daily totals of over 25 mm in the 24 hours to 9am on the 25th or 26th.
- Over 100 mm was recorded across the Upper Hunter, west of Scone, in the 24 hours to 9am on the 26th, with major flood levels forecast for the Hunter River at Singleton.
- The highest daily total for November was 150.0 mm on the 26th at Blackville (Krui Vale) in the Upper Hunter, the highest daily November total there in 137 years of site data.
- The November rain follows above average rainfall already in 2021, including that during the March floods.
- This has saturated soils and filled catchments across the state, increasing the risk of further flash flooding and riverine flooding.
- A Special Climate Statement is being prepared and is expected to be published in the coming weeks.

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Friday 3 December 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
