New South Wales in July 2022: wettest on record for much of the east coast

It was the wettest July on record for much of the east coast of New South Wales including Sydney, with rainfall around 4 to 8 times the July average. In contrast, inland areas had below average rainfall, particularly in the Riverina and far south-west of the state. Temperatures were slightly above average overall but with some cold nights in southern and western regions.

Wettest July on record for much of the coast

  • It was the wettest July on record (since 1900) for Greater Sydney, northern parts of the Illawarra and southern parts of the Mid-North Coast.
  • July rainfall was around 4 to 8 times above the 1961–1990 monthly average for most of the east coast.
  • Below average rainfall was observed over the south-west half of the state, particularly in the Riverina.
  • For New South Wales as a whole, July rainfall was 13% above the 1961–1990 monthly average.
  • The July area-averaged rainfall for Greater Sydney was the highest on record (since 1900), and the second-highest on record for the year to date (January to July).
  • The Sydney Observatory Hill site had its highest July total rainfall (404.0 mm) and year-to-date rainfall (1951.4 mm) on record, with observations there starting in 1858.
  • The highest monthly total at a Bureau gauge was 875.0 mm at Darkes Forest, in the far south of Greater Sydney.
  • A large number of sites on the east coast had their highest total July rainfall on record or their highest for at least 20 years.

Major flooding for central coastal areas including Greater Sydney

  • The record wet rainfall over central parts of the coast was due to the formation of an East Coast Low on the 2nd.
  • The East Coast Low extended a trough over different area of the central coast until the 10th, resulting in periods of intense rainfall.
  • The intense rainfall resulted in major flooding, with more than 85,000 people being displaced or ordered to evacuate.
  • The New South Wales SES responded to more than 370 flood rescues and 7,600 requests for assistance.
  • The highest daily total at a Bureau raingauge was 305.0 mm at Taree Airport in the 24 hours to 9am 7 July; this is the highest daily total recorded at Taree for any month, with observations starting in 1881.
  • Many other sites also had their highest July daily rainfall on record.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 3 August 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
