Tasmania in October 2017: warm weather arrives
Warm weather was dominant in Tasmania during October, in marked contrast to the cool September. Hobart was among the sites that had their warmest October on record. Rainfall was below average in most parts of the State, with areas in the south and east well below average.
Warm across Tasmania
- Temperatures were well above average across Tasmania both by day and by night, with sites including Hobart, Launceston and Wynyard having their highest October mean temperature on record; there were also records set for highest October mean daily maximum temperature and highest October mean daily minimum temperature
- The mean temperature for Tasmania for October was 1.48 °C above average, the second-warmest October in the 108 years of comparable record
- The mean maximum temperature for the State was 1.80 °C above average (fourth-warmest) and the State's mean minimum temperature 1.17 °C above average (also fourth-warmest)
- Around the 18th, a high pressure system over the Tasman Sea combined with a front approaching from the west to bring very warm over the State, giving a number of sites having their highest October temperature on record and a few their warmest October night on record
- Only one burst of cold air (around the 4th) and two very warm episodes (around the 18th and 28th) meant October's temperatures stood in marked contrast to the very cool September
Rain below average in most areas
- Rainfall was below average for most of Tasmania, with the total 27% below average: the State as a whole received less than half of the rain it did in October last year but more than four times the total from the record dry October 2015
- Totals were well below average (in driest 10% of Octobers) at several sites in the east and southeast; Bicheno had its driest October since 1993
- Rain was close to average over much of the northwest and central north, with several days of moderate rain scattered through the month
Record warm October in Hobart
- Hobart had its warmest October on record, with a mean temperature of 15.0 °C which is 2.6 °C above the long-term average and 0.4 °C warmer than the 1963 record
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was a record 20.0 °C, which is 3.0 °C above the long-term average and 0.3 °C warmer than the previous record from 2015
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was a record 10.0 °C, which is 2.2 °C above the long-term average and 0.5 °C warmer than the 2005 record
- Hobart's warmest day was 31.9 °C on the 18th and its warmest morning was on the 19th when the minimum temperature was 17.1 °C: the warmest October day and night since 2006
- The coldest morning was 6.0 °C on the 3rd, and the coolest day was on the 4th when the temperature reached just 10.8 °C
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 33.4 mm, slightly more than half the long-term average

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Wednesday 1 November 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.

is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
