Wednesday, 1 August 2018 - Monthly Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC17R0
Tasmania in July 2018: wet in all but the east, mild for winter
Several rain events associated with cold fronts meant most of Tasmania had a wet July, although the East Coast had another dry month. Temperatures were above average for the time of year, with Hobart having very few especially cold days.
Wet for most areas, dry on the East Coast
- Rainfall totals above average for most of Tasmania, especially the west and northeast, but below average on the East Coast
- A few sites in the west had their wettest July for several decades, which for some with short record made it their wettest July on record
- Tasmania's total rainfall was 47% above average, and the eighth-wettest July on record
- Over 653 mm of rainfall was recorded at Mount Read in the western highlands, whilst Grindstone Point on the East Coast had only 12 mm for the whole month
- Several significant rain events as cold fronts and low pressure systems crossed the State, most notably around the 6th, 17th, 24th and 29th; in several cases these led to flooding in some rivers
- A rain band with embedded thunderstorms that crossed on the 18th and 19th gave a few Central Plateau sites their highest July daily rainfall on record
Mild for winter
- Temperatures were above average across the State
- Overnight temperatures were well above average in the south and the far northwest, but closer to average in the northeast
- A few individual sites in the north had temperatures a little cooler than average
- Tasmania's mean temperature for July was 0.78 °C above average, with the mean maximum temperature 0.49 °C above average and the mean minimum temperature 1.07 °C above average
- This July was considerably warmer than July last year
- Especially in the east, there were fewer particularly cold days than is usual for the time of year
A mild July for Hobart
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 55.2 mm, just slightly above the long-term average
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 13.4 °C, which is 1.7 °C above the long-term average of 11.7 °C
- The temperature at Hobart went above 15 °C on 7 days, compared to a July average of about 3 days so mild; the warmest was the 17th with 17.9 °C
- The coldest day was the 8th at 9.2 °C; this was the only day where the temperature did not get above 10 °C in Hobart, far fewer than the July average of about 7 days so cold
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 5.8 °C, which is 1.2 °C above the long-term average of 4.6 °C
- The coldest morning was 2.6 °C on the 13th, and the warmest morning was on the 4th when the minimum temperature was 10.8 °C

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Wednesday 1 August 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
