Tasmania in November 2019: Cool and wet in the west, warm and dry in the east
Persistent westerly winds brought cool weather and rain to western Tasmania during November, but days in the east were mostly warm and dry. Several sites had their highest November temperature on record on the 21st, but there had been a fortnight of cold weather before that. Gusty westerly winds were a frequent occurrence.
Wet in the west but dry in the east
- Westerly winds were stronger and more frequent than usual over Tasmania during November, bringing rain to the western half on most days but mostly only light totals to the east
- Cold fronts embedded in the westerlies intensified the rain on several occasions: Mount Read set a new November daily rainfall on record with 83 mm to 9 am on the 28th, having already set a new record with 74 mm on the 10th, most of which fell in about 4 hours on the afternoon of the 9th
- Some sites in the west reported their highest total November rainfall for many years and a few with relatively short record had their highest total November rainfall on record
- Monthly rainfall totals near the East Coast and in the central Midlands were well below average and generally less than half the November average
- Tasmania's total rainfall was about 21% above the November average
- Rainfall for the year so far has been below average for most of Tasmania and well below average in the east, but close to average in the western highlands
Mostly cool days and nights, but a record hot day
- Persistent westerly winds and cool weather meant most days had maximum temperatures that were cooler than average, and mean maximum temperatures for the month were below average in most of Tasmania
- A few periods of warm weather ensured mean maximum temperatures were above average near the East Coast
- Many sites in the east reached over 30 °C on the 1st, but that was followed by more than a fortnight of generally cool days
- The 20th saw many sites reaching into the high 20s, and on the 21st several sites reached well into the 30s and several (including Hobart, Devonport, Bushy Park, Fingal and Orford) had their highest November temperature on record
- On the 21st Campania, Hobart Airport, Dunalley, Hobart and Orford all reported temperatures in the 10 hottest November temperatures ever recorded in Tasmania
- Some sites in the west and north had their lowest November mean daily maximum temperature on record
- Minimum temperatures were below average for most of the month (despite Strahan having its highest daily minimum temperature on record on the 1st), and for some sites had their lowest November mean daily minimum since the late 1990s
- Some sites had their lowest November overall mean temperature since the 1990s
- Tasmania's mean maximum temperature was 0.75 °C below average, the coolest since 1996; the mean minimum temperature was 0.53 °C below average, the coolest since 2006; and the overall mean temperature was 0.63 °C below average, the coolest since 2006
- Temperatures for the year so far have been above average in Tasmania, with maximum temperatures especially warm and particularly so in the east
Gusty westerly winds
- Gusty westerly winds, common in Tasmania during early spring, continued well into November
- There were 22 days during November when at least one site in Tasmania registered a wind gust over 90 km/h, well above the average in recent Novembers of around 12 such gusty days
- On 5 days at least one Tasmanian site recorded a gust over 130 km/h, something that has typically occurred only once or twice each November
- The strongest wind gust during the month was 139 km/h at both kunanyi (Mount Wellington Pinnacle) and Maatsuyker Island Lighthouse on the 14th
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 40.8 mm, which is 75% of the long-term average
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 20.2 °C, which is 1.5 °C above the long-term average of 18.7 °C
- The warmest day was 36.8 °C on the 21st, which equals the November record for Hobart that was set on the 26th in 1937
- The coolest day was on the 7th when the temperature reached 12.7 °C; Hobart typically has a day or two each November that fails to reach 13 °C
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 9.4 °C, which is 0.1 °C above the long-term average of 9.3 °C
- The coldest morning was 4.1 °C on the 5th, and the warmest morning was on the 1st when the minimum temperature was 15.0 °C
- There were 21 days during November when Hobart recorded a wind gust of 50 km/h or more, well above the November average of around 13 such gusty days
- Hobart's strongest wind gusts during the month were 91 km/h on the 13th and 87 km/h on the 6th
- The year so far has been warm and dry for Hobart, which has had its highest mean maximum temperature for the January to November period; the mean minimum temperature was also above average and total rainfall was less than two-thirds of average

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Monday 2 December 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
