Tasmania in April 2021: drier than average across the north-east

Monthly rainfall was below average across north-eastern Tasmania and close to or above average elsewhere. Maximum temperatures were higher than average in the north-east, minimum temperatures were higher than average in the south, and elsewhere temperatures were close to average for the month.

Below average rainfall for the north-east

  • April rainfall was 18% below average for the state overall and the lowest since April 2018.
  • Following a dry first week of April for much of the state, cold fronts brought rainfall across Tasmania during the middle of the month.
  • Rainfall was mostly confined to the south and west from the 23rd.
  • Hartz Mountain (Keoghs Pimple) had their highest total April rainfall on record, thanks to persistent rainfall throughout the month and moderate falls over the second weekend and on the 20th.

Above average temperatures in parts of the north-east and south

  • Averaged across the state, the mean maximum temperature was 0.19 °C cooler than average.
  • Averaged across the state, the mean minimum temperature was 0.38 °C higher than average.
  • Maximum temperatures were higher than average for the first 8 days of April before shifting to average to below average for the rest of the month.
  • Daily minimum temperatures were mostly average to above average across the month, despite several very cold mornings.
  • April's mean maximum temperatures were higher than average in the north-east, while the mean minimum temperatures were higher than average in the south. Elsewhere, mean temperatures were close to average.
  • A warm spell for southern Australia over the Easter long weekend saw many Tasmanian sites have their highest April temperature on record on the 3rd.
  • Several sites had their coldest April day on record on the 20th when a strong cold front crossed south-eastern Australia and two sites had their lowest April temperature on record the following morning; minimum temperatures were more than 8 °C below average for parts of the Central Plateau on the 21st and Liawenee's -7.4 °C is Tasmania's third coldest recorded April minimum temperature.

Hobart (Ellerslie Road)

  • Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 23.8 mm, which is 48% of the long-term average of 50.0 mm.
  • The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 18.5 °C, which is 1.1 °C above the long-term average of 17.4 °C.
  • The warmest day was 32.3 °C on the 3rd, and the coolest day was on the 20th when the temperature reached 10.2 °C.
  • The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 10.1 °C, which is 1.1 °C above the long-term average of 9.0 °C.

Notes

The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 3 May 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
