Western Australia in June 2017: Warm, very dry in the west
Rainfall in June was below average for western and northern parts of Western Australia. The statewide averaged rainfall was the ninth-lowest on record, and it was the third-driest June for the South West Land Division (SWLD). Daytime temperatures were above average for most of Western Australia and the statewide mean maximum temperature ranked third-highest in June on record, whilst it was a record warm June for the SWLD. Overnight temperatures were cooler than normal in the eastern parts of WA resulting in the statewide mean minimum temperature being slightly below average.
Very dry in western parts of Western Australia
- Rainfall for WA was ninth-lowest from comparable records commencing in 1900
- It was the third-driest June on record for the South West Land Division (SWLD); behind June of 2006 and 2013
- Monthly rainfall was generally less than 10 mm in inland Gascoyne, Central West and northern Wheat Belt
- Many sites in the SWLD and Gascoyne including multiple sites with over 100 years of rainfall records, had their driest June on record or driest for at least 20 years
- Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in southwest WA on the 22nd and 23rd from a cut-off low pressure system
- A few sites in the northwest Great Southern district recorded daily totals over 100 mm on the 23rd, and Wandering and Marradong had their highest June daily rainfall on record
Above average mean maximum temperature for most WA; below average mean minimum temperature in the east
- Mean maximum temperature for WA was third-highest for June on record, behind June of 2015 and 1962
- Mean maximum temperature for the SWLD was highest on record , being 0.6 °C higher than previous record set in June 2015
- Warm start to June in western parts of WA with daily maxima reaching to the low-30s in southern Gascoyne, some sites had their highest June temperature on record on the 1st or 5th
- Many sites in the Gascoyne and southern WA had their highest mean maximum temperature in June on record
- Mean minimum temperature for WA was slightly below average
- A cold morning along the west and south coast on the 30th, resulting in a number of new records
- Mean sea level pressure was more than 5 hPa above average for June across much of southern Australia
- Due to dominance of high pressure systems, only two cut-off low pressure systems at mid and late June and a strong cold front on the 30th produced moderate to heavy rainfall for the southwest WA

Note:
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992. From 2017 on, information about Cocos and Christmas Islands can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica |

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Monday 3 July 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
From 2017 on, information about Cocos and Christmas Islands can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
