Friday, 1 September 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in August 2017: Wet in the southwest, above average temperatures
Rainfall was near average to above average in the southern half of Western Australia, and near average to below average in the northern half of the State. Daytime temperatures were higher than normal in the north and east, resulting in the state-wide mean maximum temperature ranking as eighth-highest in August on record. Much of WA saw warmer than normal overnight temperatures, except in the northeast.
Above average rainfall in southern parts; below average rainfall in the Interiors
- Overall WA rainfall for August was close to the long-term average
- Frequent rains at the start to mid-August resulted in a few sites recording their wettest August on record, and many sites having their wettest August for over 20 years
- Rainfall averaged across the South West Land Division (SWLD) was the highest for August for 14 years, since 2003.
- A couple of high daily rainfall records were observed near the southern coast on the 1st as a cold front passed through southern WA
- A significant cold front moved through western and southern WA on the 8th and 9th and produced daily totals 30-70 mm; a number of sites broke August daily rainfall records as a result
Above average daytime temperatures in the north and east; above average overnight temperature
- Mean maximum temperature for WA was 1.9 °C above average and 7th-highest on record
- Daytime temperatures in west Kimberley were 2 °C to 3 °C warmer than normal, and Broom Airport and Bidyadanga had their warmest August on record
- Mean daytime temperatures were 1°C to 2 °C cooler than normal in the Shark Bay region; Denham had its lowest August mean maximum temperature in 25 years
- Persistent easterly winds produced temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s in the Kimberley and Pilbara between the 23rd and 28th and several sites saw record high August temperatures
- The temperature reached 39.6 °C at Mandora on the 24th, which was the equal third-highest August temperature on record in WA, and a WA early season record
- A trough near the west coast on the 27th brought mid-20s temperatures to western parts of WA, and resulted in a few August temperature records in the South West district
- Daytime temperatures were below 10 °C in parts of southwest WA on the 9th in the wake of a cold front; some sites had their coldest August day on record
- A maximum of 7.3 °C at Rocky Gully on the 9th was WA's lowest maximum temperature for 27 years, since a maximum of 7.0 °C was recorded at Mount Barker on 23 July 1990
- The mean minimum temperature for WA was 0.8 °C above average, and 0.6 °C above average for the SWLD
- Cold nights were observed in the SWLD, Goldfields, Gascoyne, and southern Pilbara in early August on the 2nd and 3rd with many sub-zero temperatures recorded, and a few August records reported
- Carnavon Airport recorded both high and low minimum temperature records during the month: record low of 3.4 °C on the 3rd, equal high of 19.5 °C on the 14th
Severe winds gusts caused a building wall collapse in Perth
- A series of cold fronts associated with a deep low pressure system supported by a strong upper level trough produced strong winds over much of the South West Land Division between 11th and 14th. A wall at the Matilda Bay Brewing Company in North Fremantle collapsed onto a parked car and the driver sustained severe injures on the 14th

Note:
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992. From 2017 on, information about Cocos and Christmas Islands can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica |

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 September 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
